Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker Assembly Replacement Guide — What This Part Does

The ice maker assembly is the complete mechanism that produces ice cubes in your Samsung refrigerator. It includes the motor, mold tray, water fill valve control, and ejection mechanism. When the freezer reaches the correct temperature, the assembly fills the mold, freezes the water, and cycles to eject cubes into the bin.

The assembly fails when the motor burns out, the mold cracks, the ejection arm jams, or moisture intrusion causes ice buildup that locks up the mechanism. Low water pressure, a clogged filter, or a poorly seated ice bucket can mimic a failed ice maker, so testing the unit before replacement saves time and money.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker, then turn off the water supply valve feeding the fridge.
  2. Open the freezer door and pull the ice bucket straight out to remove it, noting the orientation and seating tabs for reinstallation.
  3. Locate the wire harness cover or small panel on the ice maker assembly and remove the mounting screw to expose the connector.
  4. Disconnect the wire harness by pressing the locking tab and pulling the connector straight out.
  5. Release the ice maker assembly by pressing the locking tab or removing the mounting screw, then carefully slide the unit up and forward off the mounting bracket, routing around any refrigerant pipes.
  6. Position the new ice maker assembly onto the mounting bracket, slide it down until it locks, and secure with the mounting screw if your model uses one.
  7. Reconnect the wire harness by pushing the connector firmly until it clicks into place, then replace the wire cover and secure the screw.
  8. Dry any moisture from the ice maker compartment and surrounding duct area with a clean towel to prevent icing during initial operation.
  9. Reinstall the ice bucket in the correct orientation, making sure it is fully seated and does not interfere with the ice maker arm or sensor, then restore power and water and run the test button to confirm one full cycle and water fill.

When to Call a Pro

Before replacing the ice maker assembly, confirm water pressure is at least 20 psi and that the water filter is not clogged or overdue for replacement. If the test button produces a normal cycle and water fills at the end, the ice maker itself is likely fine and the issue is water supply, bucket seating, or freezer temperature. If you are uncomfortable working around refrigerant tubing or if the replacement does not restore ice production, call a technician to check the main control board, wiring harness, and valve circuits.
