Samsung Refrigerator 4E Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

4E means the freezer defrost sensor has failed. The usual fix is replacing the freezer defrost thermistor clipped to the evaporator coils.

Samsung Refrigerator 4E Error Code — What It Means

The 4E code is a freezer defrost sensor fault. This thermistor clips to the evaporator tubing and lets the board cycle the defrost heater on and off safely.

When it reads open or shorted, the board cannot trust the defrost cycle and posts 4E, which can lead to frost buildup over time.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Try a reset by holding Energy Saver and Lighting together for about 10 seconds, or unplug for 5 minutes.
  2. If 4E returns, unplug the refrigerator and empty the freezer.
  3. Remove the rear evaporator cover panel inside the freezer.
  4. Confirm the defrost sensor is clipped firmly to the coil and reseat its connector.
  5. Read the thermistor on ohms, expecting roughly 5k ohms at room temperature.
  6. Replace the freezer defrost sensor if it reads open, shorted, or off spec.
  7. Reinstall the cover, restore power, and confirm the code stays clear.

When to Call a Pro

If you also see frost rebuilding on the coils after the sensor swap, the defrost heater or board may be involved. A technician can confirm the full defrost circuit if the sensor alone does not clear it.
