Samsung Refrigerator Defrost Timer / Control Board Replacement — What This Part Does
Samsung refrigerators use either a mechanical defrost timer or an electronic adaptive defrost control board to switch the unit between cooling mode and defrost mode on schedule. The timer or board energizes the defrost heater at regular intervals to melt frost off the evaporator coils so airflow and cooling stay normal. When the defrost timer or control board fails, the refrigerator stops entering or completing defrost cycles and frost builds up on the evaporator, blocking airflow and causing the fridge compartment to warm first.
The defrost system includes the timer or board, the defrost heater, and the defrost thermostat (bimetal). Any of those components can fail and produce the same symptom, so you must test the heater and thermostat before condemning the timer or board. Wiring and connector problems at any point in the defrost circuit can also stop defrost from working. Long-running defrost failures create severe evaporator frost that can look like a compressor or airflow problem until you open the evaporator compartment.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Heavy frost or ice on evaporator coils When defrost stops working, frost builds steadily on the evaporator and blocks airflow through the coils.
- Warm fridge compartment with normal freezer temperature Blocked evaporator airflow causes the fridge section to warm first because less cold air reaches it.
- Temperature swings in both compartments As frost load increases, cooling performance drops and temperatures swing above and below setpoint.
- Poor cooling in both fridge and freezer Advanced frost buildup chokes off airflow completely and cooling drops across the entire refrigerator.
- Defrost timer will not advance or switch contacts On mechanical-timer models, manually advancing the timer clockwise does not click into defrost or back to cooling.
- No continuity at timer terminals when advanced Testing the removed timer with a multimeter shows open contacts at terminals 1–2 in defrost or 1–4 in cooling mode.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the refrigerator and shut off the water supply line before starting any work.
- Write down your refrigerator’s model number from the rating plate (usually inside the fridge compartment on the left wall or inside the door) so you order the correct replacement timer or control board.
- Locate the defrost timer (if your model has one) behind the kickplate at the bottom front or in the control panel area at the top, then remove the mounting screws and pull the timer out enough to disconnect the wire harness.
- Test the timer by manually advancing the dial clockwise until it clicks into defrost and back to cooling, checking for continuity at terminals 1–2 in defrost mode and 1–4 in cooling mode with your multimeter set to continuity.
- If your model uses an electronic adaptive defrost control board instead of a mechanical timer, remove the rear or interior access panel, disconnect the wire harness connectors, and remove the board mounting screws.
- Before replacing the timer or board, remove the evaporator cover inside the freezer and test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat (bimetal) for continuity, because a failed heater or thermostat produces the same no-defrost symptom and the board may be working correctly.
- Install the new defrost timer or control board, reconnect all wire harness connectors in the same positions, and secure all mounting screws and panels.
- Restore power and water, then monitor the refrigerator for 24 to 48 hours to verify normal cooling and that the evaporator no longer builds excessive frost between defrost cycles.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Defrost timer or adaptive defrost control board | Amazon | Part number is model-specific. Find your exact model number on the rating plate inside the fridge compartment or on the left wall, then match it to the correct Samsung timer or board. |
| Defrost heater | Amazon | Located on the evaporator coil assembly. Test for continuity before replacing the timer or board, because a bad heater produces the same symptom. |
| Defrost thermostat (bimetal) | Amazon | Mounted on the evaporator coil. Test for continuity at room temperature. If open, replace it before condemning the timer or board. |

When to Call a Pro
If you are uncomfortable working with live voltage or testing components with a multimeter, or if you have replaced the timer or board and the defrost system still does not cycle correctly, call a refrigeration technician. A tech can perform a full defrost circuit diagnosis, test for wiring faults in the harness, and verify that the compressor and sealed system are not contributing to the problem. If the evaporator compartment requires extensive disassembly or refrigerant work, professional service is the safer choice.
