Bradford White power-vent and direct-vent water heaters use a blower motor to push exhaust gases through the vent system. Error code 8 (eight slow flashes) means the air pressure switch didn’t close or the blower failed to reach the required RPM during the pre-purge or combustion cycle.
The heater won’t fire. No hot water. The issue is in the venting, the blower motor, or the air pressure switch that confirms the vent is clear.
Bradford White power-vent water heaters use a three-step safety check before ignition:
Error code 8 fires when step 2 or 3 fails — either the blower isn’t moving enough air to close the switch, or the switch itself has failed open.
Models affected: Bradford White power-vent and direct-vent gas water heaters — Defender Safety System (DSI) with blower. Not applicable to atmospheric (natural draft) models that don’t have a blower.
The heater will not attempt ignition while error code 8 is active. If the vent is actually blocked, this safety mechanism prevents carbon monoxide from being pushed into your living space.
| Code | Meaning | Severity | DIY Fix? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 flashes (every 3 sec) | Blower/inducer fault or air pressure switch open | High — burner won’t fire | Yes — vent obstructions and condensate drains are DIY |
| Cause | How common | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked vent termination (bird nest, debris) | Common in spring/fall | Clear vent cap and termination |
| Condensate drain clogged | Common on high-efficiency models | Clear drain line |
| Blower motor seized or failed | Less common | Replace blower assembly |
| Air pressure switch diaphragm stuck | Occasional | Tap switch gently or replace |
| Loose wiring at pressure switch or blower | Occasional | Re-seat connectors |
Start with the vent and condensate drain — these are the most common causes and cost nothing to fix.
Turn the gas control knob to OFF, wait 60 seconds, and turn it back to the desired temperature setting. Listen carefully during startup:
Go outside and look at the vent cap on your roof or exterior wall. Common obstructions:
Clear any obstructions. If the vent ran without a cap or screen and a bird built a nest deep in the pipe, you may need a vent brush kit to push debris all the way through.
High-efficiency Bradford White models produce condensate that must drain freely. If the drain line is blocked, water backs up into the pressure switch tubing and the switch can’t close.
The condensate line must have a downward slope with no sags or traps that collect water.
The pressure switch is a small disc-shaped device with two rubber tubes connected to it. It closes when it senses negative pressure from the blower.
To test the switch electrically:
If you can’t manually close the switch with suction, it’s failed and needs replacement.
If the vent is clear, the condensate drain is flowing, and the pressure switch tests good, the blower motor itself may be failing.
Blower motor replacement requires removing the jacket panel and disconnecting the vent pipe. Take photos before disconnecting to help with reassembly.
Loose or corroded connections can cause intermittent error code 8.
