Low-cost line-side part to check when one phase is missing or unstable.
Price this when a pole is burned, intermittent, or not closing under load.
Useful for sag, imbalance, and harsh incoming power conditions.
Fault LF on a Yaskawa drive (A1000, V1000, GA700, GA800) stands for Output Phase Loss. The drive’s output current monitoring detected that one of the three output phases (U/T1, V/T2, W/T3) has significantly lower current than the others during operation. This indicates either a broken connection between the drive and motor, or an open phase winding inside the motor. The drive trips on LF to prevent motor overheating and bearing damage from single-phasing.
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Motor cable (VFD-rated, screened) | Replace if any conductor shows intermittent or open continuity |
| Motor (rewind or replacement) | If open winding is confirmed |
| Output contactor | Replace if single pole fails to make contact |
When diagnosing VFD faults, always check the drive’s fault history before resetting. Modern drives store the last 5-10 faults with the drive state at the time (running, accelerating, decelerating, stopped). An overcurrent fault that occurs only during acceleration points to incorrect motor data or mechanical binding. The same fault during deceleration suggests regeneration issues. A ground fault that clears after disconnecting the motor and returns when reconnected means the motor or cable insulation has failed.
Prevention: Schedule annual infrared scanning of drive cabinets. Loose power connections and failing capacitors produce heat long before they cause faults. A 5-minute scan can prevent hours of unplanned downtime.
Before ordering, match the drive part to the model number, electrical rating, and failure symptom. Check current prices on Amazon - prices and availability change frequently.
Verifying LF fault with a scope or power analyzer provides better data than a clamp meter for intermittent output phase loss. Motor rewinding requires a motor shop. Always use lockout/tagout before working on drive output circuits.
