Senville Mini Split Error Code E5 — What It Means
E5 on a Senville mini split indicates a drain protection fault — the indoor unit has detected that water is accumulating in the condensate drain pan rather than draining away. Senville units include a float switch or water level sensor in the drain pan; when water rises above a safe level, the sensor trips, the compressor shuts off, and E5 is displayed. This protects the equipment and the wall from water damage. The compressor will remain off until the drain issue is resolved.
Common Causes
- Blocked condensate drain line — Algae, mold, or debris accumulating in the drain line is the most common cause. The line clogs slowly over months of operation.
- Improperly pitched drain line — A drain line installed without adequate slope, or with a sagging low point, traps water and prevents gravity drainage.
- Clogged condensate pump — Units installed in locations where gravity drainage is not possible use a small condensate pump. If the pump impeller jams or the pump fails, water backs up into the pan.
- Failed float switch — The float switch itself can fail in the upward (tripped) position, falsely indicating water even when the pan is dry.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Power off the unit — Switch off the circuit breaker before inspecting the drain system.
- Locate the drain pan and float switch — Remove the indoor unit’s front cover and filter to access the drain pan. Check if water is actually present in the pan.
- Clear the drain line — If water is standing in the pan, flush the drain line with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar, or use a wet/dry vacuum at the drain outlet to pull the clog out. Clear lines should flow freely when water is poured into the pan.
- Check drain line slope — The drain line should pitch downward at least 1/4 inch per foot from the indoor unit to the drain outlet. Correct any sags or uphill sections.
- Service the condensate pump — If a pump is installed, verify it powers on and the float rises freely. Clean the pump reservoir and confirm the outlet line is not blocked.
- Test the float switch — With the pan dry, manually lift the float and confirm the switch trips (system shuts off). With the float down, confirm the switch clears. Replace the float switch if it is stuck in the tripped position.
- Restore power and test — Power on and run a 30-minute cooling cycle. Verify water drains freely and E5 does not return.
