Senville Mini Split E1 Error Code — Causes & Fix

2 min read

What this code means

E1 on a Senville mini split indicates a communication fault between the indoor and outdoor units. The indoor control board is not receiving a valid signal from the outdoor PCB over the communication wire. Senville units (which share a platform with several OEM brands) rely on this serial data link for compressor speed control, protection coordination, and operating mode synchronization. Without communication, the system will not run.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Check the outdoor unit breaker — Confirm the outdoor unit has power. Go to the electrical panel and verify its dedicated circuit breaker is in the ON position and has not tripped.
  2. Power cycle the system — Turn off the indoor unit with the remote, then cut power at the outdoor unit breaker for 60 seconds. Restore power and allow the system 2 minutes to initialize before checking for the fault.
  3. Inspect terminal wiring at both units — Open the indoor and outdoor electrical access panels. Verify the wiring to the terminal block matches the wiring diagram. On Senville units, terminals are typically labeled 1 (L), 2 (N), 3 (S/signal), and ground. Confirm the signal wire (S) is connected at both ends.
  4. Test the signal wire continuity — With power off, use a multimeter in continuity mode to test the S wire from the indoor terminal to the outdoor terminal. An open indicates a broken wire.
  5. Swap or replace the signal wire — If the wire is broken, run a new 18 AWG wire alongside the existing line set bundle. Senville typically uses three-conductor cable (L, N, S) plus a separate ground.
  6. Inspect board connectors — At both the indoor and outdoor PCBs, check that the ribbon or wiring harness connectors are fully seated.
  7. Reset the system — After wiring corrections, restore power and verify the E1 fault clears and the system operates through a full cycle.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
18 AWG 3-conductor cableAmazon | For replacing damaged communication wire runs
Indoor control boardAmazon | Replace if wire and power check out but E1 persists
Outdoor control board (PCB)Amazon | Replace if outdoor unit confirmed as communication failure source

When to Call a Pro

If the signal wire is intact and power is confirmed at both units but E1 persists, both PCBs should be tested. This requires a technician familiar with mini split diagnostics to determine which board has failed.
