“Error 6: Move Roomba to a new location and press CLEAN to restart.” This error is one of the most common issues for Roomba owners. It means the robot thinks it is dangling over a cliff or a set of stairs. While this is a vital safety feature, it often triggers in the middle of a flat room because the sensors are dirty or because the robot is “confused” by a dark-colored rug.
The good news is that you can fix Roomba Error 6 with a simple cleaning or a minor adjustment to your flooring.
Roombas use infrared cliff sensors on their underside to “bounce” a signal off the floor. If the signal doesn’t bounce back, the robot assumes there is no floor and stops.
| Symptom | Meaning | Severity | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Error 6 | Cliff sensor blocked / Dark rug | Low | Clean sensors / Move robot |
| Error 15 | Internal communication error | Moderate | Power Reset |
| Error 17 | Path blocked / Lighting issue | Low | Turn on more lights |
| Bumper Error | Bumper is stuck | Low | Tap bumper to loosen |
Dust buildup on the cliff sensors is the #1 cause of Error 6.
