Dyson cordless vacuums (V8, V10, V11, V15) are powerful machines, but they are highly sensitive to airflow restrictions and battery temperature. When your Dyson pulses (turns on and off rapidly) or displays a message on its screen, it’s usually trying to save its motor from overheating.
The most common Dyson “errors” are actually maintenance reminders to wash your filter or check for a clog.
On newer Dyson models (V11 and V15), the LCD screen will show an animation of a clog or a filter. On older models (V7, V8, V10), a blue light or a flashing red light on the battery pack provides the diagnosis.
| Symptom | Meaning | Severity | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pulsing/Stuttering | Airway Blockage | Low | Check wand and bin inlet |
| Flashing Red Light | Battery Failure | High | Replace Battery pack |
| Filter Animation | Dirty Filter | Low | Wash and dry filter (24 hours) |
| Blue Light (Flashing) | Low Battery | Low | Charge for 3.5 hours |
If your Dyson turns on and off rhythmically, there is a physical obstruction.
A “dirty filter” error is the #1 cause of lost suction.
If your Dyson blinks red more than 12 times when you pull the trigger:
Dyson vacuums are incredibly durable, but their digital motors are proprietary.
A Dyson that pulses is usually protecting the motor from an airflow blockage. Check the wand, bin inlet, cleaner head, and filter before replacing parts.
A flashing red light usually points to battery failure after the vacuum has cooled and the charger has been checked.
Let the filter air dry for at least 24 hours before reinstalling it. A damp filter can damage the motor.
