Alarm 415 on a Navien tankless water heater is a flow-related fault in the domestic hot water circuit. The control board is not receiving the expected signal from the flow sensor, which tells the unit how much water is moving through the heat exchanger. According to Navien, the problem is most often that the flow sensor inside the unit is not spinning properly, either because of debris, scale buildup, or a mechanical failure of the sensor itself.

The code prevents the heater from firing because the control cannot measure flow accurately. In some cases the water adjustment valve assembly (which works alongside the flow sensor to regulate flow) may also be involved. The fault can sometimes be cleared temporarily by cycling the pressure relief valve to flush out debris, but persistent codes usually require cleaning or replacing the flow sensor or addressing a restriction in the water path.

  1. Turn off power and close the inlet and outlet service valves to isolate the heater, then relieve pressure by opening a hot tap downstream until flow stops.
  2. Remove and inspect the inlet filter (usually a fine mesh screen just inside the cold-water service valve) and clean or replace it if you find sediment, scale, or debris.
  3. Cycle the pressure relief valve by lifting the lever for a few seconds to flush any debris near the flow sensor, as Navien recommends, then close it and check that it seats properly.
  4. Restore water supply and power, open a hot-water fixture, and observe whether the heater fires and the code clears.
  5. If the code persists, access the flow sensor by removing the front cover and locating the flow sensor assembly (consult your model’s service manual for the exact position and procedure).
  6. Remove the flow sensor, inspect the turbine for free rotation and clean any scale or debris from the housing and turbine blades using white vinegar or a descaling solution, then rinse thoroughly.
  7. Reassemble and test by reinstalling the sensor with new O-rings if disturbed, restoring power and water, and running a hot-water draw to confirm the alarm does not return.
  8. If cleaning does not resolve the fault, replace the flow sensor or water adjustment valve assembly as indicated by your diagnostic results and the parts available for your specific Navien model.
