Maytag Washer Lid Switch Replacement — What This Part Does

The lid switch is a mechanical safety interlock that tells the washer when the lid is closed. On older Maytag direct-drive top-loaders, a small pin on the lid presses down on the switch lever, completing the circuit so the machine can agitate and spin. On newer Maytag and Whirlpool-built top-loaders, a lid lock assembly handles the same safety function and also physically locks the lid during high-speed spin.

These assemblies fail when internal contacts wear out, the switch mechanism breaks, or the wiring harness corrodes. A misaligned lid pin or strike can also prevent the switch from actuating properly. Without a working lid switch or lock, the washer will refuse to run, won’t spin out water, or won’t recognize that the lid is closed.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and turn off the water supply valves to prevent accidental start or flooding during the repair.
  2. Identify whether your washer uses an older mechanical lid switch or a newer lid lock assembly by checking your model number on the data plate (usually inside the lid or on the rear panel).
  3. Remove the top or rear access panel depending on your model. On older direct-drive Maytags, remove the screws securing the upper back panel to expose the lid switch mounted at the top rear of the cabinet.
  4. Inspect the lid pin or strike on the underside of the lid to confirm it lines up with the switch lever or lock mechanism and is not bent or broken.
  5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the lid switch or lid lock assembly. Note the position of any grounding wire attached to the switch mounting bracket.
  6. Remove the screws or clips holding the switch or lock assembly to the cabinet and lift it out. On some models you may need to release small plastic tabs to free the assembly.
  7. Install the new lid switch or lid lock assembly in the same orientation, reconnect the grounding wire if present, and plug in the wiring harness until it clicks into place.
  8. Position the new switch so the lid pin or strike properly actuates the lever when the lid closes. Some direct-drive models require you to adjust the switch bracket before final tightening to set the correct actuation point.
  9. Reinstall the access panel, restore power and water, and run a short cycle with the lid closed to verify the washer starts, agitates, and spins normally. Open the lid during agitation to confirm the machine stops immediately.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working around live electrical components or cannot safely access the lid switch area, call a tech. If the new switch or lock does not resolve the problem, the fault may be in the main control board, wiring harness, or timer, which require proper diagnostic tools and schematic knowledge. On models where the lid lock assembly is integrated with complex electronic controls, professional diagnosis can save you from ordering the wrong part.
