Replace when E31 or output shorts trace to a damaged gun cable or torch assembly.
Match coil voltage and welder model before replacing for E12 or E13 contactor faults.
Check this cable first when E20 communication faults appear between feeder and power source.
Lincoln Electric Power MIG welders (210 MP, 256, 260, 350MP) are widely used MIG, flux-core, and multi-process welders. They display alphanumeric error codes on the digital panel when faults occur. This guide covers the most common Power MIG error codes.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| E10 | Thermal overload |
| E11 | Thermal overload (secondary) |
| E12 | Input contactor fault |
| E13 | Output contactor fault |
| E14 | Input voltage fault |
| E20 | Wire feeder communication fault |
| E31 | Output overcurrent |
Leave the welder powered on and stop welding — the fan must run during cooldown. Clean intake and exhaust vents. Check duty cycle: a Power MIG 256 at 200A is rated 40% duty cycle; running it continuously will trip E10.
Input or output contactor failed. Check contactor coil resistance (50–500Ω typical) and contact condition. Power cycle once — if E12/E13 returns immediately, the contactor or its drive circuit needs replacement.
Measure input voltage at the machine terminals. Check for phase loss on three-phase models. Eliminate extension cords — Power MIG welders need full rated voltage under load.
The control circuit lost communication with the wire feeder. Check all connections between the feeder and the power source. Reseat connectors. A faulty interconnect cable is a common cause.
Short circuit at the output. Inspect gun, cable, and nozzle/tip for shorts. Power cycle after clearing.
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| MIG gun | Replace if internal cable short found |
| Input/output contactor | Match to Power MIG model |
| Interconnect cable (feeder to PS) | For E20 |
Before ordering, match the replacement part to the model number, electrical rating, and failure symptom. Check current prices on Amazon - prices and availability change frequently.
Lincoln Electric authorized service handles internal component replacement for Power MIG units with persistent fault codes.
E10 and E11 are thermal overload faults. Let the fan cool the welder, clean blocked vents, and compare the welding current to the rated duty cycle.
E20 means the feeder communication circuit dropped out. Reseat the feeder cable, inspect connector pins, and replace the interconnect cable if the fault follows the cable.
E31 points to output overcurrent or a short. Inspect the gun, cable, nozzle, and contact tip before power-cycling the machine.
