dE on an LG washer means the machine doesn’t confirm the door is closed and locked. It won’t start without a confirmed latch. Check for items caught in the door seal before replacing anything.
dE1 = door won’t lock (machine won’t start) dE2 = door won’t unlock at end of cycle
What This Error Means
The door latch assembly contains a switch that confirms the door is fully latched. Without that confirmation, the machine refuses to run.
Common Causes
- Clothing caught in the door seal — Most common cause. A sock or sleeve trapped between the gasket and door glass prevents a full close
- Debris in the latch mechanism — Lint or small items blocking engagement
- Misaligned door strike — The plastic hook on the door doesn’t line up with the receiver
- Failed door latch switch — Switch inside the latch has failed electrically
- Sagging door hinge — Worn hinge causes door to sag and misalign
- dE2 specifically — Use the manual release (small loop or wire in the latch area, accessible via the bottom access panel) to open the door
Step-by-Step Fix

Check for caught clothing. Run your finger around the entire door gasket/glass junction.

Inspect and clear the latch area. Look into the latch receiver with a flashlight. Clear any debris.

Close the door firmly. You should hear an audible click. If it closes but doesn’t click, the latch spring mechanism is worn.

Check door alignment. Open and close the door slowly — the hook and receiver should line up without the door being lifted or pushed sideways to engage.

Test the door latch switch with a multimeter. Remove the latch assembly (2–3 screws). The switch should show continuity when latched and open when unlatched. Either state stuck on or off = failed switch.
