LE on an LG washer means the motor has been overloaded or locked. LG uses a direct-drive motor with no belt, and LE is specific to that design. Unplug the machine for 30 minutes first — thermal reset clears LE in a significant number of cases.
What This Error Means
LG’s direct-drive motors have a hall sensor that monitors rotor position and speed. LE appears when the rotor isn’t turning at the expected rate — because the drum is overloaded, debris is wrapped around the rotor, or the hall sensor or stator has failed.
Common Causes
- Overloaded drum — Too many clothes put too much torque demand on the motor
- Debris on the rotor — Hair, thread, or fabric wound around the rotor shaft
- Failed hall sensor — The position sensor reporting rotor movement has failed
- Stator or rotor damage — Motor windings or magnets have failed
Step-by-Step Fix

Unplug the machine for 30 minutes. LG direct-drive motors have thermal protection. If overheated, unplugging allows the motor to cool and reset. Plug back in and try again.

Reduce the load size. If the machine was full, remove 30% of the items. Overloading is the most common cause.

Check the rotor for debris. Remove the back panel (front-loaders) or tip the machine back (top-loaders). Inspect the large round rotor attached to the drum shaft for wrapped hair, thread, or fabric. Remove any debris.

Test the hall sensor. Locate the small sensor attached near the stator. Test with a multimeter. Incorrect signal voltage or no continuity on the appropriate pin means failure.

Test the stator. Each winding should show continuity. Open circuit on any winding means the stator has failed.

If thermal reset and load reduction don’t fix LE, try the hall sensor next (cheap part, easy swap) before moving to stator replacement. A technician can diagnose which component has failed with a multimeter in under 20 minutes.
