Likely parts to price

Price the common parts before you book service.

Cooling fan

Common VFD, drive, UPS, and cabinet overheating failure point.

Control keypad

Useful to price when faults involve display, keypad, or operator-panel behavior.

Fuses

Low-cost first check for power-stage and line-side faults.

Braking resistor

Price this on drive overvoltage, braking, or deceleration faults.

Hypertherm Plasma Cutter Fault 0-30 — What It Means

Fault 0-30 on Hypertherm plasma cutters (Powermax series) indicates a consumable or shield detection fault — the machine has detected that the shield is missing, not seated correctly, or the torch consumables are damaged or incorrect. Hypertherm’s SmartSense torch protection circuitry monitors the torch assembly before each cut and will not fire the arc if the consumable stack is incomplete or misassembled.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power off the machine — Always power down before handling torch consumables. High voltage is present at the torch.
  2. Disassemble and inspect the torch — Remove the shield, retaining cap, nozzle, swirl ring, and electrode. Inspect each piece. Look for heavy wear on the electrode pit (replace when pit exceeds 1/16”) and nozzle orifice erosion.
  3. Verify correct consumables — Match every part to the Hypertherm consumable chart for your model and amperage. Using 45A consumables on an 85A setting, or vice versa, will trigger faults.
  4. Reassemble carefully — Reinstall consumables in the correct order. Hand-tighten the shield — overtightening damages threads and causes intermittent faults.
  5. Check the torch lead connection — Inspect the torch connection at the power supply for bent pins, corrosion, or debris. Unplug and reseat, then power on and test.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
ElectrodeReplace when pit depth exceeds 1/16” (1.5mm)
NozzleReplace when orifice is eroded or asymmetrical
Shield / retaining capReplace if cracked, burnt, or threads are damaged

Need Replacement Parts?

Before ordering, match the replacement part to the model number, electrical rating, and failure symptom. Check current prices on Amazon - prices and availability change frequently.

When to Call a Pro

If all consumables are correct and new and fault 0-30 persists, the torch body or torch lead may have an internal wiring fault. Torch lead repair and power supply diagnostics should be handled by a Hypertherm authorized service center.
