GE Dishwasher Heating Element Replacement — What This Part Does
The heating element in your GE dishwasher raises water temperature during the wash cycle and provides heat for the dry cycle. GE designs expect incoming water at 120°F and the element adds extra heat to reach sanitizing temperatures and evaporate moisture. Over time, the element can crack, corrode, or develop an open circuit from thermal cycling and mineral deposits.
When the element fails, the control board may log code C6 (water temperature too low) or the unit simply won’t dry dishes. In many GE models, a high-limit thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) sits in series with the element and can also open if it sees excessive heat, cutting power to the heater even if the element itself is still good.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dishes come out wet after a full cycle The heated dry phase doesn’t work and dishes stay soaked or streaky.
- Water feels cool or lukewarm during wash Touch the door mid-cycle and it stays cold instead of warming up.
- Long run times or cycle won’t finish The dishwasher runs far longer than normal because it never reaches target temperature.
- C6 fault code on display GE’s C6 error means water temperature is too low, pointing to heater circuit trouble.
- Visible cracks or blistering on the element Pull the lower rack and shine a light on the metal coil at the bottom for physical damage.
- Burned or melted wiring at element terminals Loose connections or a failing element can char the spade connectors underneath.
How to Replace It
- Shut off power at the circuit breaker and turn off the water supply valve under the sink.
- Pull the bottom dish rack out and remove the lower spray arm by twisting or lifting it off the mount.
- Unscrew the kickplate at the front base of the dishwasher and slide the unit out a few inches or tilt it back to access the underside.
- Locate the two spade terminals where wires connect to the heating element studs protruding through the tub floor.
- Label or photograph the wire colors, then pull the spade connectors straight off the element terminals.
- Use a multimeter set to ohms and touch one probe to each terminal on the element (a good GE element typically reads 16.6 to 17.1 Ω, and infinite resistance means the element is open and failed).
- If the element tests bad, unscrew the hex nuts or fasteners holding the element studs to the tub from underneath (some models also have a bracket or grounding screw).
- Carefully pull the old element down and out, noting the rubber grommets or insulators on each stud.
- Slide the new element up through the tub floor, fit the grommets onto the studs, and hand-tighten the mounting nuts from below without overtorque.
- Reconnect the spade terminals to the element studs, push the dishwasher back into place, replace the spray arm and kickplate, restore water and power, and run a heated cycle to verify the water warms and dishes dry.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| GE dishwasher heating element | Amazon | Check the model and serial number on the label inside the door frame or on the side of the tub. Cross-reference that number with an OEM or aftermarket parts supplier to get the correct element and any included grommets or mounting hardware for your exact model. |

When to Call a Pro
If the heating element tests good (correct resistance and no visible damage) but you still have no heat, the high-limit thermostat, thermal cutout, or control board may be at fault. Tracing those circuits and testing the relay path on the board requires a wiring diagram and experience with live voltage checks. If you see heavily corroded wiring, burned connectors, or you’re uncomfortable working under a partially disassembled dishwasher in a tight space, call an appliance technician to diagnose the heater circuit end to end.
