Frigidaire refrigerators (including the Gallery and Professional series) use a sophisticated electronic control system. When your fridge beeps and displays a code like SY CE or H1, it’s usually because the main control board has lost contact with one of the sensors or fans inside the unit.
Most Frigidaire refrigerator errors can be cleared with a simple power reset or by checking for ice buildup in the freezer.
What This Error Means
Frigidaire uses “SY” (System) and letter-number combinations.
- SY CE: Communication Error. The display panel on the front cannot “talk” to the main board in the back.
- SY EF: Evaporator Fan Error. The fan that circulates cold air is jammed or has failed.
- H1: High Temperature. The freezer is warmer than 20°F (-7°C) for too long.
- OP: Open Sensor. The temperature sensor is disconnected or broken.

Step-by-Step Fix
1. Resolving SY CE (Communication Error)
This is usually a software “glitch” caused by a brief power flicker.
- The Power Reset: Unplug the refrigerator from the wall (or turn off its breaker) for 5 full minutes.
- Plug it back in. This forces the display and the main board to perform a fresh “handshake.”
- If the error returns immediately, the wiring harness that passes through the top door hinge may be pinched or loose.
2. Fixing SY EF (Evaporator Fan Error)
This is the #1 cause of a fridge that isn’t cold but a freezer that is.
- Listen for the fan inside the freezer. If you hear a “chirping” or “grinding” sound, or no sound at all, the fan is the issue.
- The Ice Fix: Sometimes ice builds up around the fan blades, jamming them. Empty the freezer and look at the back wall. If you see frost, use a hairdryer on a warm (not hot) setting to melt the ice through the vents.
- If the fan doesn’t start after melting the ice, the Evaporator Fan Motor needs to be replaced.
3. Resolving H1 (High Temperature Error)
- Check that the freezer door was fully closed. Even a 1/4 inch gap can cause H1.
- Clean the Condenser Coils (the black coils under or behind the fridge). If they are covered in pet hair or dust, the fridge can’t release heat.
- The Reset: To clear the H1 code on many models, you must press the Alarm Reset or Default Settings button on the display.
4. Fixing OP / SH (Sensor Errors)
- These codes mean the “Thermistor” (temperature sensor) is reading outside its normal range.
- Locate the sensor (usually a small white plastic cap on the side wall of the fridge or freezer).
- The Fix: Ensure it isn’t covered by a bag of frozen peas or a box of food. If the wiring is secure, the thermistor likely needs to be replaced ($15–$25 part).
