00 or FF — Demo Mode (Most Common “Error” on New GE Fridges)
If your GE refrigerator shows 00 or FF on the temperature display and nothing is getting cold, check demo mode before anything else. Thousands of people call service technicians for this.
Demo mode disables the cooling system so the refrigerator can run in a store without cooling. Some units ship from the factory in demo mode, and it can also be accidentally activated by pressing certain button combinations.
How to exit demo mode: Hold both the Refrigerator and Freezer temperature buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until the display flashes or beeps. Specific button combinations vary by model — consult your manual or search your model number plus “demo mode exit.”
After exiting demo mode, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to reach temperature.
E0 — Freezer Thermistor Fault
The freezer temperature sensor has failed or is reading out of range. The fridge may not cool the freezer properly, or the defrost cycle may not run correctly.
Fix: The thermistor is a small sensor located in the freezer compartment. Test with a multimeter — resistance should change with temperature (approximately 10,000–16,000 ohms at freezer temp). An open circuit or constant reading indicates failure. Replace the thermistor.
E1 — Fresh Food Thermistor Fault
Same as E0 but for the fresh food (refrigerator) compartment sensor. The fridge section may run too cold or too warm as a result.
Fix: Locate the thermistor in the fresh food section (often attached to the back wall near the air duct). Test and replace same as E0.
E2 — Freezer Defrost Sensor Fault
The sensor that monitors defrost cycle temperature in the freezer has failed. If defrost doesn’t run correctly, frost will build up on the evaporator coils over time.
Fix: Test the defrost thermostat/sensor for continuity. It should show continuity when cold and open when warm (it’s a thermal cutout). Replace if it fails continuity in either state.
E3 — Freezer Defrost Heater Fault
The defrost heater — the element that melts frost off the evaporator coils — has failed. You may notice frost building on the back wall of the freezer, or items in the freezer aren’t as cold because the evaporator is iced over.
Fix: Access the evaporator (behind the back panel of the freezer). Test the heater for continuity. No continuity means it’s burned out — replace it.
E5 — Ice Maker Fault
The ice maker thermistor or ice maker control has a fault. The ice maker may not produce ice or may produce it inconsistently.
Fix: Run a manual ice maker test cycle (button combination varies by model). Check the water filter — a clogged filter restricts ice maker water supply. If the filter is current and the ice maker still doesn’t produce, the ice maker thermistor or assembly needs replacement.
PF — Power Failure
PF means a power interruption occurred while the refrigerator was running. This is informational — not a fault. The fridge resumed normally. Simply press any button to clear PF from the display.
