LG Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Weak water flow, bad taste, or filter light on mean your filter is overdue. Replacing the cartridge every 6 months restores pressure and resets the reminder.

LG Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement — What This Part Does

The water filter cartridge sits in the upper right corner or grille of most LG refrigerators and removes sediment, chlorine, and contaminants from the water supply before it reaches the dispenser and ice maker. LG designs these filters to handle about 200 gallons or 6 months of use, whichever comes first.

Over time the carbon media and pleated membrane load up with particles and organics, restricting flow and allowing off-tastes or odors to pass through. The refrigerator tracks volume or time and triggers a replacement reminder light when the service interval expires. Installing the wrong filter or failing to seat it fully can cause leaks at the housing or continued poor flow.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Locate the model and serial number plate inside the left door frame or on the back wall, then visit the LG filter-finder tool or cross-reference the part number printed on your current filter cartridge to order the correct OEM replacement.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker to kill power before you start.
  3. Turn off the household water supply valve feeding the refrigerator to prevent leaks during the swap.
  4. Open the refrigerator door and locate the filter housing in the upper-right interior corner (French-door models) or behind the grille at the bottom front (side-by-side and top-freezer models).
  5. For twist-lock cartridges, rotate the old filter counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it releases, then pull straight down or out; for push-button housings, press the eject button and pull the cartridge free.
  6. Remove the protective caps from both ends of the new filter cartridge and discard any tape or packaging.
  7. Align the tabs or threads on the new cartridge with the housing slots, push upward or inward until it stops, then twist clockwise (if twist-lock) until it locks into place and you feel resistance.
  8. Turn the household water valve back on slowly and check the housing and connections for drips or spray while the line pressurizes.
  9. Plug the refrigerator back in or switch the breaker on, then hold down the Filter Reset or Water Filter button on the control panel for 3 seconds until the indicator light turns off or changes to green.
  10. Dispense and discard about 2.5 gallons of water (roughly 5 minutes at a steady pour, pausing every minute to avoid overloading the reservoir) to flush carbon fines and trapped air from the new cartridge and lines.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
LG OEM water filter cartridgeAmazon | Match to your refrigerator model number using the LG filter-finder tool or the part number printed on your current filter (for example ADQ36006101 for certain French-door models); using third-party or incorrect cartridges can cause leaks and reduced flow.

When to Call a Pro

If you cannot find your exact model’s filter number, water continues to leak from the housing after you’ve seated the new cartridge twice, or the filter light will not reset after following the button sequence, call an appliance tech. A cracked housing, damaged water valve, or control-board fault requires diagnosis with a multimeter and access to service-mode menus.
