Whirlpool Washer Won’t Turn On — What’s Happening

When a Whirlpool washer won’t turn on, you either have no power reaching the machine at all or the control system is locked out or faulted. If the panel is completely dead, the problem is typically loss of incoming electricity or a failed control board. If the display lights up but the washer won’t start a cycle, Whirlpool recommends a 5-minute power reset to clear unspecified fault codes, and you may also see codes like F8 E1 (no water detected) or other F# E# messages that prevent operation. A door or lid that won’t lock can also stop the machine from starting even when power is present.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm the washer is plugged in securely and that the circuit breaker in your panel is not tripped or loose.
  2. Test the wall outlet with a multimeter or plug in a lamp to verify you have 120 V AC at the receptacle.
  3. Unplug the washer or flip its dedicated breaker off, wait a full 5 minutes, then restore power and press the cycle selector and Start to reset any stored fault codes.
  4. Check that control lock is not active by looking for a padlock icon on the display and pressing the control-lock button combination for your model to disable it.
  5. Open the door or lid and inspect the latch strike and lock mechanism for damage, misalignment, or foreign objects, and listen for a click when you close the door firmly.
  6. Enter the machine’s diagnostic or service mode according to your model’s procedure and read any active or stored fault codes on the display.
  7. If you see F8 E1 or a no-water message, verify both hot and cold inlet valves are open, straighten any kinked hoses, and remove and clean the inlet screens at the back of the washer.
  8. Remove the top or rear access panel and inspect all wire harnesses and connectors for loose plugs, corrosion, or broken wires, especially at the door lock and control boards.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Door lock assembly (lid lock)Amazon | Replace if the latch does not click closed or fails continuity testing across its terminals.
Main control boardAmazon | Required when the display is dead or unresponsive after power and wiring checks pass.
User-interface control boardAmazon | Swap if buttons do not respond but the main board still has power and operates other functions.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you have verified incoming power and completed a 5-minute reset but the washer remains completely unresponsive or if you are uncomfortable working inside the cabinet to test control boards and wiring harnesses with a multimeter. A technician can safely retrieve stored fault codes, perform voltage and continuity tests on internal components, and replace the correct board or lock assembly without risk of shock or further damage to the machine.
