F20 on a Whirlpool washer means the machine didn’t detect water flowing in during the fill cycle. Most F20 errors are supply-side issues — a closed valve, clogged screen, or low water pressure — not a broken washer.
What This Error Means
At the start of a cycle, the washer opens the inlet valve and monitors water flow. If water doesn’t reach the minimum fill level within about 4 minutes, F20 appears.
Common Causes
- Supply valves not fully open — Hot and cold valves behind the machine partially closed
- Clogged inlet screens — Mesh filters at the hose-to-machine connections blocked with sediment
- Low water pressure — Whirlpool requires minimum 20 PSI
- Kinked inlet hose — Sharp bend restricting flow
- Failed inlet valve — Solenoid won’t open
Step-by-Step Fix

Confirm both supply valves are fully open. Turn hot and cold valves counterclockwise until they stop.

Check hoses for kinks. Pull the machine out a few inches and inspect.

Clean the inlet screens.
- Turn off both supply valves.
- Unscrew the hoses at the back of the machine.
- Pull out the small mesh screens from the ports.
- Rinse, scrub with a toothbrush, reinstall.
- Reconnect hoses and reopen valves.

Run a test cycle. F20 should clear if the screens were the issue.

Test water pressure with a gauge if low pressure is suspected.

Test the inlet valve with a multimeter if all supply checks pass. Good solenoid reads 500–1500 ohms. Open circuit = failed valve.
