Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement — What This Part Does

The water filter cartridge removes contaminants from incoming water before it reaches the dispenser and ice maker. Whirlpool refrigerators monitor filter life with a timer and status light, typically signaling replacement every 6 to 9 months. Over time sediment and particles clog the filter media, reducing flow and filtration performance.

Failure happens because the cartridge reaches its service life, the filter becomes blocked, or the replacement was not seated correctly. If the light stays on after you swap the cartridge, the control needs a manual reset using the buttons for your specific model. Low supply pressure or a kinked water line can mimic filter problems, so always check those before assuming the cartridge is bad.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the circuit breaker to kill power to the unit.
  2. Turn off the household water supply valve to the refrigerator to prevent leaks during removal.
  3. Locate the filter compartment, usually inside the fresh-food section on the upper right or in the base grille, depending on your model.
  4. Remove the old cartridge by twisting it counterclockwise a quarter turn or pressing the eject button, then pull the cartridge straight out.
  5. Inspect the filter housing for debris, cracks, or buildup and wipe it clean with a damp cloth before installing the new cartridge.
  6. Remove any protective caps from the new filter and align the cartridge with the housing, then push it in and twist clockwise until it locks or clicks into place.
  7. Turn the water supply valve back on and check for leaks around the filter housing and water line connections.
  8. Restore power to the refrigerator and run two gallons of water through the dispenser to flush air and carbon fines from the new cartridge.
  9. Reset the filter indicator using the button sequence for your control type: press and hold MAX COOL plus MAX ICE for three seconds on Type 1, press FILTER RESET on Type 2, hold WATER FILTER for three seconds on Type 3, navigate OPTIONS to FILTER RESET to MEASURED FILL on Type 4, or hold LIGHT plus ICE TYPE for three seconds on Type 5, then verify the light turns off or changes to blue.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Whirlpool water filter cartridgeAmazon | Part number depends on your refrigerator model. Check the model and serial plate inside the fresh-food door or on the left wall. Many Whirlpool units use EveryDrop by Whirlpool cartridges as the genuine replacement. Cross-reference your model number in the user manual or on the Whirlpool website to identify the correct filter.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if the filter light will not reset after you have followed every button sequence for your control type, if water still flows slowly after replacing the cartridge and verifying supply pressure is adequate, or if you see leaks around the housing that a new O-ring or seal does not fix. Persistent taste or odor problems after flushing two gallons can indicate a control board issue or contamination in the water line. A pro can also help if you cannot identify the correct replacement cartridge for your model or if the housing itself is cracked and needs replacement.
