Weil-McLain Boiler Error Code E10 — What It Means
The Weil-McLain E10 error code means low system water pressure. On Weil-McLain gas boilers (Ultra, GV, WM97+ series), E10 fires when the system pressure sensor reads below the minimum threshold — typically below 5–10 PSI depending on the model. The boiler locks out on E10 to prevent operating the heat exchanger without adequate water flow, which would cause thermal damage. E10 is one of the most commonly searched Weil-McLain codes because the fix is usually quick and doesn’t require a service call.
Common Causes
- Normal pressure loss over time — Hydronic systems lose water slowly through automatic air vents and micro-leaks; without an auto-fill, pressure must be manually topped off periodically.
- Failed or waterlogged expansion tank — When the expansion tank bladder fails, the system can’t buffer pressure swings, and cold-fill pressure drops below E10 threshold.
- Visible leak in the system — A dripping fitting, corroded coupling, or weeping air vent is removing water from the loop faster than normal.
- Auto-fill valve closed or stuck — If the make-up water valve is closed or seized, the system can’t repressurize itself automatically.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Check the pressure gauge — Look at the pressure gauge on the boiler or system piping. Most residential systems should sit at 12–15 PSI cold. Below 10 PSI = time to add water.
- Open the manual fill valve — Locate the cold water make-up line feeding the boiler loop (usually near the boiler). Slowly open the manual fill valve until the gauge reads 15 PSI, then close. Don’t overfill — over 30 PSI can trip the pressure relief valve.
- Check the expansion tank — Relieve system pressure, then check the Schrader valve on the expansion tank with a tire gauge. Should read 12 PSI. If water discharges from the Schrader valve, the tank bladder has failed.
- Inspect for leaks — Walk the entire piping loop looking for drips, wet insulation, or mineral staining. Even a slow weep will cause E10 to recur within days.
- Reset the boiler — Press the RESET button on the boiler control. If pressure holds, the boiler should restart normally. If E10 returns within 24–48 hours, there’s a leak you haven’t located.
