The Scotsman Prodigy Plus line is the evolution of the original Prodigy ice machine series, adding enhanced diagnostics, self-cleaning capabilities, and a more detailed alert system. Models in this series include the C0322SA, C0530SA, C0830SA, C1030SA, and C1448SA. When the machine faults, it displays an alert code on the front-panel LED display or diagnostic port. Here’s what every code means and how to clear it.
The Prodigy Plus uses a numeric alert system displayed on the control board’s LED readout. Codes are either displayed directly on a digital display (on newer models) or communicated via a tech port accessible with the Scotsman Digital Service Tool. Alert codes in the 1–8 range are common operational alerts; codes in the 10+ range indicate more serious hardware faults.
The machine also has LED status lights: GREEN = normal operation, AMBER = alert condition, RED = machine is locked out.
The ice-making cycle is taking longer than the maximum time limit. On Prodigy Plus units, a freeze cycle normally runs 12–22 minutes depending on incoming water temperature and ambient conditions. If the cycle exceeds the maximum time limit (typically 45–60 minutes), the machine logs Alert 1.
Common causes: Low refrigerant charge, dirty condenser coil, high ambient temperature (above 100°F), very cold incoming water (below 50°F), scale buildup on the evaporator, or a failing compressor.
Start here: Clean the condenser coil with a soft brush and rinse with water. Check ambient temperature around the unit — it needs 35°F–110°F for air-cooled models. If the coil is clean and temperature is reasonable, the issue is refrigerant-side.
The harvest (ice release) cycle exceeded its maximum duration. Normally runs 60–90 seconds. Alert 2 means ice isn’t releasing from the evaporator plate cleanly.
Common causes: Scale buildup on the evaporator, low harvest water flow, failed water valve, or a stuck harvest assist solenoid. Run a manual clean cycle first. If the evaporator has visible mineral scale (white or gray buildup), run a Scotsman Scale Away or equivalent descaler through a full clean cycle.
The compressor discharge line temperature exceeded the safe limit (approximately 225°F). This indicates a refrigerant system problem — either low charge, high compression ratio due to a dirty condenser, or a failing compressor.
Clean the condenser first. If discharge temperature is still high after cleaning, a technician needs to check refrigerant pressures.
The water level sensor isn’t detecting water in the sump when it should be, or is detecting water when it shouldn’t. On Prodigy Plus models, this sensor is a probe that reads conductivity.
Check: Water supply valve is open, inlet water pressure is 20–80 PSI, the water fill valve is opening (you should hear it during the fill phase), and the sensor probe isn’t coated with scale. Clean the sensor probe with vinegar or Scotsman Ice Machine Cleaner.
The high-side refrigerant pressure exceeded the cutoff. Same root causes as Alert 3 but triggered by the high-pressure cutout switch rather than discharge temperature. Clean the condenser coil and verify the condenser fan is running. If the fan has failed, Alert 5 will trip within minutes of startup.
Low suction pressure — refrigerant charge is low or there’s a restriction on the low side. This is a refrigerant leak until proven otherwise. A tech with gauges is required.
The ice level (bin control) sensor isn’t working correctly. The machine thinks the bin is full when it isn’t, or can’t determine the ice level.
Check: Bin control sensor probe or thermostat (location varies — on older Prodigy it’s a thermostat clipped to the evaporator; on Prodigy Plus it may be an infrared sensor). Clean the sensor. If it’s a mechanical thermostat type, test it with a glass of ice water.
The machine went into harvest before the ice was fully formed — typically less than 6 minutes into the freeze cycle. This usually means the harvest thermostat or control board is triggering harvest prematurely.
Test the harvest thermostat: it should read OPEN above approximately 48°F and CLOSED below that. If it reads closed at room temperature, it has failed.
Codes 10 and above typically indicate a sensor out of range or a control board fault. These require the Scotsman Digital Service Tool or a tech with the service manual to interpret.

Q: How often should I run a clean cycle on the Scotsman Prodigy Plus?
A: Scotsman recommends every 6 months minimum. In hard-water areas, every 3 months is better practice. Mineral scale on the evaporator reduces ice quality, slows production, and is the single biggest cause of Alert 1 and Alert 2 faults. Clean cycles cost you a box of ice machine cleaner and 2 hours of machine downtime. Ignoring them costs you a service call.
Q: The Prodigy Plus is showing an amber light but still making ice. Should I stop it?
A: Amber means the machine detected an alert condition but is still operational — it’s a warning, not a lockout. Note the alert code, address the underlying cause, and clear it. Running on an amber alert is fine short-term, but if you ignore it, the condition usually worsens until the machine red-lights and stops.
Q: My Scotsman Prodigy Plus is making less ice than before. No alert codes. What’s happening?
A: Gradual production decline without a fault code usually points to one of three things: the condenser coil is partially dirty and restricting airflow, the evaporator has light scale that isn’t triggering an alert yet, or the ambient temperature around the machine has increased (a new wall, blocked air flow, or warmer location). Clean both the condenser and run a descale cycle. If production is still low, a technician should check refrigerant charge.
Q: How do I manually enter the service mode on the Scotsman Prodigy Plus?
A: Press and hold the CLEAN and ON/OFF buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. The display enters diagnostic mode and shows live sensor readings. Press the CLEAN button to cycle through parameters: discharge temperature, suction pressure (if equipped with a transducer), freeze time, harvest time, and water level. This is the fastest way to diagnose an intermittent fault without waiting for it to trip.
Q: Alert 4 clears after a manual reset but comes back the next day. Water supply is confirmed fine. What else?
A: If water supply is verified, check the water level sensor probe in the sump. On Prodigy Plus models it’s a stainless probe — mineral buildup on it increases resistance and causes false “no water” readings. Clean it with descaler or vinegar. Also check that the probe connector is fully seated on the control board. A loose connector causes the same intermittent symptom.
Alert 2 means the harvest cycle took too long. Start with scale on the evaporator, weak harvest water flow, the water inlet valve, and harvest-assist hardware before moving to refrigerant or board diagnosis.
Yes. Dirty condenser airflow can cause long freeze, high discharge temperature, and high-pressure alerts. Clean the coil and confirm the condenser fan runs before deeper refrigeration checks.
After fixing the cause, press ON/OFF to clear the alert and restart. For a red lockout, hold OFF for 5 seconds, wait 30 seconds, then press ON and watch the next full cycle.
