⚡ Quick Answer

Usually the latch is stuck in the locked position or the door isn't fully seated. Power-cycle the range, press the door plunger, and hold Child Lock for 3 seconds to reset.

Samsung Oven Door Won’t Lock — What’s Happening

When your Samsung oven door won’t lock, the range is detecting a door or latch state mismatch. The latch is not reaching the expected locked position, the door is not fully seated against the frame, or the control board is not seeing the door-plunger feedback it expects. Samsung does not publish this as a single universal error code but treats it as a door-lock, door-not-closing, or latch-position condition.

If the latch does not engage the top door catch correctly, it can remain stuck in the locked position and the door may not close completely. If the oven is still hot or has just finished a high-heat or self-clean cycle, the lock may not release until the unit cools down. The problem can be mechanical (something blocking the door, hinges out of position, latch stuck) or electrical (faulty lock motor, plunger switch not being read, wiring issue, or control-board fault).

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Let the oven cool completely if it was recently in use or finished a self-clean cycle, then retest the door lock.
  2. Power-cycle the range at the circuit breaker for 60 seconds, restore power, and check if the latch resets.
  3. Open the door and check for racks, the divider partition, debris, or any obstruction preventing the door from seating fully against the frame.
  4. Verify the door hinges are not bent, sagging, or left in the unlocked position if the door was removed for cleaning or service.
  5. Press the door plunger switch (located in the door frame where the door edge contacts it) and hold Child Lock for 3 seconds to attempt a manual reset of the latch.
  6. If the latch is visibly stuck in the locked position, apply light steady pressure to the latch for about 20 seconds or until it returns to the normal open position.
  7. If the fault persists, inspect the door lock assembly for binding or motor failure, check the plunger switch for proper actuation, and inspect wiring connectors at the latch area for looseness or damage.
  8. If the lock motor does not hum or move when you attempt to lock the door (and power and wiring are good), replace the door lock assembly rather than forcing the mechanism.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Door lock assembly (or door lock motor)Amazon | Motorized latch mechanism that moves the lock into and out of position.
Door plunger switchAmazon | Small switch in the door frame that signals the control board when the door is closed.
Door hingesAmazon | Replace if bent, sagging, or preventing the door from seating correctly.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if the door lock assembly or plunger switch requires replacement, if you are not comfortable working with live 240 V connections at the range, or if the control board is suspected and you need diagnostic equipment to verify lock-motor voltage and feedback signals. Also call if forcing or prying the latch risks further damage to the door catch or latch strike area at the top of the door. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
