On Samsung Wind-Free and AM series mini-splits, E4 is the sensor fault category and the two-digit suffix identifies which sensor: 01 typically refers to the room temperature sensor (TA sensor). When the PCB reads resistance outside the expected range, it triggers the E4-01 fault and disables operation to prevent temperature runaway.
Common Causes
- Failed room temperature thermistor (TA sensor) — NTC thermistors age and drift over time. Exposure to condensation inside the unit accelerates failure. A failed sensor reads open or shorted and immediately triggers E4-01.
- Loose or corroded sensor connector — The thermistor connects to the indoor PCB via a small 2-pin Molex connector. Condensation inside the unit can corrode the pins, producing an intermittent high-resistance connection that the PCB interprets as sensor failure.
- Damaged thermistor lead wire — A wire pinched behind a panel during a service call or worn through from vibration can short or open-circuit the sensor signal.

Step-by-Step Fix
- Power off and remove the front panel — Disconnect the indoor unit from power. Remove the front panel and filter to access the sensor.
- Locate the TA sensor — The room temperature sensor (TA) is typically a small bead clipped to the air inlet grille area or mounted in the return air path. Refer to your Samsung service manual for exact location.
- Test the sensor resistance — Disconnect from the PCB and measure resistance with a multimeter. At 77°F (25°C), a Samsung TA sensor typically reads 10 kΩ ± 10%. Open or shorted sensor = replace.
- Inspect and clean the connector — Even if the sensor tests in-spec, spray the connector pins with contact cleaner, allow to dry, and reseat firmly.
