Samsung Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement - Signs & How-To

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Squealing, grinding, or a drum that won't turn usually means a failed idler pulley. Replacing the pulley assembly restores belt tension and rotation.

Samsung Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement — What This Part Does

The idler pulley assembly keeps constant tension on the drum belt so the motor can spin the drum smoothly. A spring-loaded arm presses the pulley wheel against the belt, preventing slippage and keeping the belt tracking correctly. Over time, the pulley bearing wears out, the wheel seizes, or the tension spring weakens, which lets the belt slip or stop driving the drum altogether. Heat, lint buildup, and normal mechanical wear are the main reasons the pulley binds or wobbles. When the pulley fails, you’ll hear noise or the drum won’t rotate, even though the motor is running.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet to cut all power before you begin.
  2. Remove the screws securing the top panel and lift it up and back, or slide it forward to release the clips, depending on your model.
  3. Take off the front bulkhead or drum access panel by removing the mounting screws so you can reach the drum, belt, and idler assembly inside.
  4. Lift the drum slightly or pull it forward to release tension on the belt, then slip the belt off the motor pulley and idler pulley.
  5. Unhook the tension spring from the idler arm and remove the mounting screw or shoulder screw holding the idler assembly to the base or rear bulkhead.
  6. Inspect the old pulley wheel for roughness, wobble, seized bearing, or visible damage, and check the tension spring for stretching or breaks.
  7. Install the new idler pulley assembly on its mounting point, reconnect the tension spring to the arm, and verify the pulley wheel spins freely by hand.
  8. Loop the drum belt around the drum, then route it under the idler pulley and around the motor pulley, making sure the ribbed side of the belt contacts each pulley correctly.
  9. Reinstall the front bulkhead and top panel, plug in the dryer, and run a short test cycle to confirm the drum rotates smoothly without noise.

When to Call a Pro

If you’re uncomfortable working inside the cabinet, if the drum doesn’t rotate after you’ve replaced both the pulley and belt, or if you find additional damage to the motor pulley, drum rollers, or rear bearing, call a qualified appliance technician. A pro can also verify correct belt routing and tension on models with complex access panels or hidden fasteners.
