Kenmore Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement — What This Part Does
The idler pulley is part of the belt-tension system in your Kenmore dryer. It keeps the drive belt tight around the drum and motor pulley so the drum can spin smoothly during the cycle. Over time, the pulley bearing wears out or the wheel itself becomes damaged from friction and heat.
When the pulley fails, it can no longer maintain correct belt tension. You will hear squealing or squeaking during operation, or the drum may stop tumbling altogether. Many techs replace the drive belt at the same time since both parts wear together and the dryer is already open.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Squealing or squeaking during the cycle A worn pulley wheel or bearing creates high-pitched noise as the belt moves over it.
- Drum will not tumble or turns very slowly A seized or broken pulley cannot keep the belt tight, so the drum does not spin properly.
- Dryer starts but clothes do not dry If the drum is not turning, air flows through but clothes stay wet because there is no tumbling action.
- Visible wear or damage on the pulley wheel Inspect the pulley and you may see grooves, cracks, or a wheel that does not spin freely on its axle.
- Belt slips off or appears loose Without correct tension from the idler pulley, the belt can wander or fall off the motor or drum pulleys.
- Burning smell or hot pulley A binding pulley can overheat from friction and produce a burning odor during operation.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and wear work gloves for sharp edges.
- Pull out the lint screen, remove the two screws inside the lint screen housing, then lift the top panel up and prop it open.
- Remove the screws along the top edge of the front panel, release any clips at the bottom corners, and carefully lift the front panel off to expose the drum and belt system.
- Take a photo of the belt routing around the drum, idler pulley, and motor pulley so you can match it during reassembly.
- Push the idler pulley toward the motor to release tension, then slip the belt off the motor pulley and idler pulley and let the drum rest.
- Remove the idler pulley from its mounting bracket or axle (some models use a tri-ring retainer or clip, others use a bolt or pin).
- Install the new idler pulley on the bracket, then loop the belt around the drum with the ribbed side against the drum and route it through the idler pulley and motor pulley following your photo.
- Rotate the drum by hand one full turn to confirm the belt tracks smoothly and is not twisted.
- Reattach the front panel and top, replace all screws and clips, reinstall the lint screen, plug in the dryer, and run a short test cycle to verify quiet operation and proper tumbling.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Kenmore dryer idler pulley assembly | Amazon | Check your model and serial number on the plate inside the door or on the back panel. Common OEM part numbers include W10837240 and 691366 depending on your model family. Some assemblies include the bracket and hardware. |
| Dryer drive belt | Amazon | Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, or fraying while the dryer is open. Many techs replace the belt at the same time as the idler pulley to avoid a second repair soon after. |

When to Call a Pro
If you are not comfortable disassembling the front panel and routing the belt correctly, call a technician. Incorrect belt routing or a twisted belt will cause noise and poor drum rotation. If you find other worn components like a damaged drum roller, drum bearing, or motor pulley during the repair, a pro can replace the entire set in one visit and verify smooth operation before leaving.
