Ring doorbells are the foundation of many smart homes, but they are highly dependent on two things: stable Wi-Fi and consistent voltage. When your Ring shows a “P2-0” error or stays stuck on “Activating Device,” it’s usually because the signal is too weak or the battery isn’t providing enough power to wake the camera.
Most Ring errors are related to network latency or low voltage from your existing doorbell transformer.
What This Error Means
Ring errors are often displayed as alphanumeric codes in the app or as patterns on the LED ring around the button.
- P2-0 / P2-5: The doorbell is connected to Wi-Fi but cannot reach Ring’s cloud servers.
- Blinking White Light: The doorbell is in setup mode or is having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi.
- Streaming Error: The camera is trying to start the live feed but the “uplink” speed is too low.
- Activating Device: The app is waiting for the camera to “wake up” from its low-power sleep state.

Step-by-Step Fix
1. The “Device Health” Check (The #1 diagnostic)
Before you unscrew the doorbell, check its internal signal strength.
- Open the Ring App and go to Devices > [Your Doorbell] > Device Health.
- Look for RSSI. This measures signal strength.
- Good: -30 to -50.
- Bad: -60 to -90. If your RSSI is -70 or worse, the camera will constantly throw connection errors.
- The Fix: Move your Wi-Fi router closer to the front door, or install a Ring Chime Pro which acts as a Wi-Fi bridge specifically for Ring devices.
2. Resolving “Error P2-0” (Connection Failure)
This usually means your phone and the doorbell are out of sync.
- Close the Ring app completely on your phone.
- Toggle your phone’s Wi-Fi Off and back On.
- The Hard Reset: Remove the faceplate of the doorbell. Locate the Orange Button (or the small reset button). Press and hold it for 15 full seconds. The light will flash, and the doorbell will reboot. You will need to set it up again in the app.
3. Fixing “Streaming Error” (Live View Fails)
If you get notifications but can’t see the video:
- Ensure your phone isn’t on a weak cellular signal.
- Check your router’s Upstream bandwidth. Ring requires at least 2Mbps of upload speed per camera.
- Disable any VPNs on your phone. Ring’s security protocols often block VPN traffic.
4. Resolving Low Voltage / Power Issues
If your hardwired Ring doorbell keeps going offline or won’t ring the internal chime:
- Go to Device Health and check the Power Output.
- If it says “Poor” or “Insufficient,” your existing doorbell transformer (usually hidden in the attic or garage) is too weak.
- The Fix: You need a 16V-30VA transformer. Most standard doorbells only use a 10V transformer, which isn’t enough to power a camera and a Wi-Fi chip.

When to Call a Professional
Ring doorbells are sealed units and cannot be internally repaired.
- Foggy or Blurry Lens: If moisture has gotten behind the lens, the seal has failed. This is a warranty issue.
- Button is stuck or cracked: The physical button can wear out after several years of use.
- Wiring Issues: If you’re uncomfortable working with 16V wiring at the transformer, call an electrician.
