Step-by-Step Fix
- Check and clean the inlet filter screen — A partially clogged cold water inlet filter reduces flow and can cause temperature spikes. Remove, rinse, and reinstall.
- Flush the heat exchanger — For units 2+ years old in hard water areas, perform a vinegar descale: connect a small pump to the service isolation valves, circulate white vinegar (1 gallon) through the unit for 45–60 minutes.
- Test the outlet thermistor — Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance. Compare to the Noritz NRC/NRCR temperature-resistance table. A reading more than 15% off at room temperature indicates a drifting sensor — replace it.
