Navien E009 Error Code - What It Means
E009 on a Navien tankless water heater or combi-boiler indicates a heat exchanger overtemperature fault. The heat exchanger outlet temperature sensor detected water temperature exceeding the safe upper limit. This is a thermal protection lockout, so the unit shuts down to prevent damage to the copper heat exchanger, connecting hoses, and surrounding components.
Common Causes
- No water flow or very low flow through the unit - Tankless heaters require a minimum flow rate, typically 0.5 to 0.75 GPM, to transfer heat from the heat exchanger into the water stream. Without adequate flow, the exchanger overheats rapidly.
- Scaled heat exchanger - Mineral scale, especially calcium carbonate, builds up on heat exchanger surfaces over time in hard water areas, reducing heat transfer efficiency and causing localized overheating.
- Failed flow sensor - If the flow sensor fails and reports zero flow when water is actually moving, the control board may restrict the gas valve but the burner may still overfire.
- Faulty outlet temperature thermistor - A thermistor drifting high will report false overtemperature. The unit shuts down even when actual water temperature is normal.

- Check for minimum flow - Confirm the fixture demand is above the unit’s minimum flow rate. Clean or replace aerators and showerheads that may be restricting flow below the activation threshold.
- Inspect the cold water inlet filter - Navien units have a small in-line filter screen at the cold water inlet. A clogged filter screen reduces flow significantly, so remove and clean it.
- Flush the heat exchanger - If the unit is more than 2 years old in a hard water area above 7 grains per gallon, perform a descale flush through the service port valves. Use a circulation pump and descaling solution or white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Test the outlet thermistor - With power off, disconnect the heat exchanger outlet thermistor and measure resistance. At 25 C, expect approximately 10 kOhm for a typical NTC thermistor. A reading far from the temperature-resistance curve in the service manual indicates a failed thermistor.
- Reset and test - After repairs, press Power off/on or hold the Reset button. Run the unit at full demand and monitor for E009 recurrence.
