What Mitsubishi mini-split P8 means, why the compressor faults, and how to diagnose and fix it.

Likely parts to price

Price the common parts before you book service.

Run capacitor

Common no-start and weak-compressor failure point. Match the microfarad and voltage rating.

Flame sensor

Price this first on furnace ignition faults after cleaning and safety checks.

Igniter

Common furnace start failure part. Confirm connector and model compatibility.

Control board

Higher-cost part to price only after power, sensor, and wiring checks.

Mitsubishi P8 Error Code — What It Means

P8 on a Mitsubishi mini-split system indicates a compressor fault — specifically, the outdoor unit’s inverter drive detected a problem with compressor operation. This can mean the compressor is drawing abnormal current, the inverter module (IPM — Intelligent Power Module) detected overcurrent or overtemperature, or the compressor itself has an internal failure. P8 is one of the more serious Mitsubishi error codes and typically requires component-level diagnosis.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Clean the outdoor condenser coil — Power off and wash the coil fins from the inside out with low-pressure water. Clear cottonwood, grass, and debris. Restore power and retry — if P8 was caused by a dirty coil driving high head pressure, it may clear.
  2. Check refrigerant charge (licensed tech) — If the coil is clean but the system is running warm on the suction line and showing high superheat, refrigerant is low. Have a certified technician check pressures and recharge if needed.
  3. Inspect the outdoor unit control board/IPM — Look for burned components, discoloration, or obvious damage on the power board. An IPM failure is often visible as a burned or cracked IGBT module.
  4. Check compressor resistance — With power off and capacitors discharged, measure compressor winding resistance between terminals (T1-T2, T2-T3, T1-T3). All readings should be within 1 ohm of each other. Also check each terminal to ground — infinite resistance expected. Shorts to ground indicate a failed compressor.
  5. Power cycle and error check — After any repairs, power cycle the outdoor unit (main breaker off for 5 minutes). Observe startup for P8 recurrence.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
IPM (Intelligent Power Module)Mitsubishi OEM; match outdoor unit model exactly
Outdoor unit main control boardOften bundled with IPM on smaller units
CompressorMajor repair; compare to new system cost for older units
Refrigerant (R-410A or R-32)Requires licensed tech for handling

Technician Tips

Mini-split and VRF faults usually come from condensate drainage, thermistors, indoor-outdoor communication wiring, outdoor airflow, inverter protection, or control-board inputs. Match the code to the exact indoor and outdoor model, then check filters, drains, coils, wiring terminals, and sensor seating before replacing electronics.

DIY vs Pro: Cleaning filters, clearing drains, checking obvious loose connectors, and power-cycling once are reasonable first steps. Refrigerant work, inverter-board diagnostics, high-voltage testing, and sealed-system repairs need a qualified HVAC technician.

Need Replacement Parts?

Before ordering, match the HVAC part to the model number, electrical rating, and failure symptom. Check current prices on Amazon - prices and availability change frequently.

When to Call a Pro

P8 involving a compressor or IPM failure requires a licensed HVAC technician with inverter drive diagnostic experience. Compressor replacement on a mini-split also requires refrigerant recovery and recharge — EPA 608 certification is required.
