Maytag Washer Won't Fill With Water - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Usually clogged inlet screens or a closed water valve. Check both hot and cold supply faucets are open, then clean the screens at the valve.

Maytag Washer Won’t Fill With Water — What’s Happening

A Maytag washer that won’t fill with water is usually not a specific error code by itself. On many Maytag and Whirlpool-built models the related fault is F8 E1 or LF (Long Fill), meaning the washer is taking too long to reach the expected water level. The fault points to a supply problem, inlet valve issue, pressure-sensing failure, or control fault rather than a single universal part.

On models with adaptive sensing, the control may interpret a pressure sensor input as already full, which can also prevent fill. The machine either stops mid-cycle or extends the fill time because it is not detecting a normal water level within the allowed window.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify both household hot and cold faucets behind the washer are fully open and inspect inlet hoses for kinks, crushing, or obvious restriction.
  2. Check the drain hose installation to confirm it is not shoved too far down the standpipe and is routed correctly without causing siphoning.
  3. Unplug the washer, shut off water, remove the fill hoses at the washer, and inspect the small screen filters in the valve inlets for sediment or mineral buildup. Clean the screens without damaging them, reconnect, and retest fill.
  4. With hoses removed from the washer, route the hose ends into a bucket and briefly open the wall valves to verify strong household flow. If flow is weak, the issue is upstream plumbing, shutoff valves, or hoses rather than the washer.
  5. If supply and screens are good but the washer still won’t fill, test the water inlet valve by verifying coil resistance with power disconnected, then confirm line voltage reaches the valve during an active fill command. Replace the valve assembly if it receives correct voltage but does not open properly.
  6. Inspect the pressure switch and its small air tube for disconnects, splits, blockages, or water in the tube. Blow gently into the pressure switch port and listen for a click. No click or abnormal behavior suggests a failed switch.
  7. If the valve and pressure system test good, perform continuity checks on the valve harness wiring and verify the control board sends fill voltage during the cycle.
  8. Repair damaged wiring or replace the control board only after the preceding checks confirm those parts are the failure point.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if you are not comfortable working with live voltage testing or if the inlet valve and pressure system both test good but the washer still will not fill. Control board diagnosis and wiring continuity checks require a multimeter and familiarity with the machine schematic. Also call if you find low household water pressure (below 20 psi at the inlet valve) and suspect a plumbing issue upstream of the appliance, since that requires a plumber rather than an appliance repair.
