Maytag LdU Error Code — What It Means

The LdU (or dU) error code on Maytag top-load washers means the control has detected that something is preventing the lid lock from releasing. The machine keeps the lid locked until the obstruction is cleared. According to Maytag product help, this fault occurs when objects on or around the washer lid physically block the lid-lock mechanism from unlocking.

In most cases, the code is triggered by items placed on top of the washer (laundry baskets, detergent bottles, or other household items) or by detergent buildup around the lid-lock area. The washer is designed to protect the lock mechanism by refusing to unlock until the obstruction is removed. If the code persists after removing visible obstructions, the lid-lock assembly itself or its mounting hardware may be damaged or misaligned.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Remove all items from the top of the washer lid, including laundry baskets, detergent bottles, and any other objects that may press down on the lid.
  2. Inspect the lid-lock area by opening the lid as far as it will go and checking for visible detergent buildup, debris, or damage around the lock strike and latch mechanism.
  3. Clean the lock and strike with a damp cloth to remove any soap residue or buildup that could cause binding, then wipe dry.
  4. Unplug the washer for 60 seconds to reset the control board, then plug it back in and attempt to run a short cycle to test if the error has cleared.
  5. Check the lid-lock assembly and strike for cracks, loose mounting screws, or misalignment if the code returns after reset.
  6. Inspect the wiring harness at the lid-lock connector for loose pins, corrosion, or damaged insulation, and reseat the connector firmly.
  7. Replace the lid-lock assembly if it will not release reliably after obstruction removal and the strike and wiring are intact, as the internal solenoid or latch may have failed.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Lid lock assemblyAmazon | Primary component when the lock will not release after clearing obstructions and resetting.
Lid strike / latch hardwareAmazon | Replace if the strike is cracked, bent, or misaligned and prevents smooth lock engagement.
Wiring harness connector (lid lock circuit)Amazon | Needed only if the connector or wiring to the lock is damaged or corroded.

When to Call a Pro

If the LdU code persists after you have removed all obstructions, cleaned the lock area, and performed a power reset, the lid-lock assembly or its wiring likely requires replacement. This repair involves accessing the top panel or cabinet, disconnecting live electrical connectors, and aligning the new lock with the strike. A qualified appliance technician can diagnose the lock circuit with a meter, verify proper harness continuity, and install the correct replacement part for your model. Call a pro if you are uncomfortable working with electrical components or if the washer lid remains locked after all user-level troubleshooting.
