Maytag Washer Drive Belt Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Worn, cracked, or broken drive belts cause no spin, no agitate, slow drum movement, or squealing. Replacing the belt restores torque transfer.

Maytag Washer Drive Belt Replacement — What This Part Does

The drive belt connects the motor pulley to the gearcase or splutch pulley, transferring torque from the motor to spin and agitate the tub. When the belt wears out, stretches, cracks, or breaks, that power transfer stops or slips, even though the motor keeps running.

Belts fail from normal wear over time, friction, or incorrect installation that leaves them misaligned on the pulleys. Once the belt loses grip or breaks, you’ll see wash cycle failures or hear squealing from slippage.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and turn off both hot and cold water supply valves.
  2. Pull the washer away from the wall and disconnect the inlet hoses and drain hose.
  3. Tip the washer carefully onto its front or back to access the bottom panel, depending on your model’s service access.
  4. Use a 5/16-inch socket or driver to remove the screws holding the belt shield or pulley cover in place, then lift the cover off.
  5. Inspect the old belt for cracks, stretching, or breaks, then rotate the gearcase or splutch pulley while pulling the belt free from both pulleys.
  6. Check both the motor pulley and the gearcase or splutch pulley for damage, debris, or misalignment before installing the new belt.
  7. Place the new belt around the motor pulley first, then loop it onto the gearcase or splutch pulley while rotating the pulley by hand until the belt seats fully and centers on both pulleys.
  8. Spin the pulley by hand to verify smooth movement and correct belt tracking, then reinstall the belt shield or cover and fasten the screws.
  9. Return the washer upright, reconnect the water hoses and drain hose, plug in the power cord, and run a test cycle to confirm spin and agitate functions work properly.

When to Call a Pro

If you’re not comfortable tipping the washer on its side or working around pulleys and belts in tight quarters, call a tech. Also bring in a pro if the new belt slips or squeals after installation, which points to pulley damage, motor mount problems, or transmission wear that needs diagnosis beyond a simple belt swap.
