Maytag Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement - Signs & How-To

⚡ Quick Answer

Squealing, grinding, or a drum that won't turn usually means a worn idler pulley. Replacing the pulley and routing the belt correctly restores tension and spin.

Maytag Dryer Idler Pulley Replacement — What This Part Does

The idler pulley is part of your dryer’s belt-tension system. It keeps the drive belt tight against the drum and motor shaft so the drum rotates properly when the motor runs. The pulley rides on a bearing or bushing, and over time that bearing wears out or the pulley wheel itself cracks or seizes.

When the pulley fails, belt tension drops and the drum either slips, rotates slowly, or stops turning altogether. You’ll often hear squealing or grinding as the worn bearing drags. This is a mechanical failure, not an electronic fault code, and the fix is to replace the pulley assembly and verify correct belt routing.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the wall and shut off the gas supply valve if your model is gas-fired.
  2. Remove the screws at the bottom of the front panel, tilt the panel forward, disconnect the door-switch wire harness, and lift the panel away to access the front bulkhead.
  3. Remove the screws securing the front bulkhead and lift the bulkhead off to expose the drum and belt path.
  4. Reach under the drum, push the idler pulley upward to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the motor shaft and pulley wheel.
  5. Lift the drum out of the cabinet and set it aside on a clean surface.
  6. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the C-clip (retaining clip) and washer from the idler shaft, then slide the old pulley off the bracket.
  7. Wipe the idler shaft clean, slide the new pulley wheel onto the shaft, reinstall the washer and C-clip, and confirm the pulley spins freely.
  8. Set the drum back into the cabinet and route the belt around the drum, then under and around the motor pulley, and finally over the idler pulley in the correct zig-zag path for your model.
  9. Rotate the drum by hand several full turns to verify the belt tracks straight, the drum spins smoothly, and all rollers and pulleys turn without binding or noise before you reinstall the front bulkhead and panel.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if you are uncomfortable removing the front panel and drum, if the belt path for your specific model is unclear, or if the drum still binds or makes noise after you install the new pulley and verify correct belt routing. On gas dryers, have a qualified technician handle any work that involves disconnecting or servicing the burner assembly or gas connections.
