LG Washer Won't Drain - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

A clogged drain pump filter or coin trap is the most common cause. Unplug the washer, drain residual water, remove and clean the filter, then test a spin cycle.

LG Washer Won’t Drain — What’s Happening

When your LG front-load washer won’t drain, it means the machine cannot remove water from the tub during or after the wash cycle. This usually triggers the OE or 0E error code on the display, which LG defines as a drain failure where water is not evacuated within the expected time.

The washer may stop mid-cycle with standing water in the drum, or it may complete the wash but leave clothes soaking wet because the spin cycle cannot run while water is present. LG ties this symptom directly to blockages or failures in the drainage system, not to fill valve or door-lock problems.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the washer from power and pull it away from the wall to access the rear drain hose.
  2. Inspect the drain hose for kinks, pinches, internal clogs, and confirm it is installed no higher than 53 inches above the floor.
  3. Locate the drain pump filter access panel at the lower front of the washer, place towels on the floor, and use the small service drain tube to empty residual water into a shallow pan.
  4. Remove the drain pump filter by turning it counterclockwise, clean out all debris, lint, and foreign objects, then rinse and reinstall the filter.
  5. Check the standpipe or sink drain where the hose discharges to confirm the house plumbing is not clogged.
  6. Run a spin-only or drain cycle and listen at the lower left or right corner of the washer during the first 15 seconds for a humming sound, which indicates the pump motor is receiving power.
  7. If the pump hums but water does not move, remove the filter again and inspect the pump impeller and housing for jammed debris or a broken impeller blade.
  8. If the pump makes no sound at all, test for 120 VAC at the pump connector during a drain command, and inspect wiring and connectors between the pump and control board.

Parts You Might Need

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you have cleared the filter and hose, confirmed the house drain is open, and the pump still does not run or move water. Electrical diagnostics at the pump and control board require live voltage testing with the washer plugged in, which carries shock risk. A pro can safely test for 120 VAC at the pump connector, trace wiring faults, and replace the pump or main control board if needed. If the washer is still under warranty, contact LG or an authorized service provider before opening the cabinet or replacing parts yourself.
