LG Washer Drive Motor/Stator-Rotor Replacement — What This Part Does
The direct-drive motor assembly in your LG washer consists of a stator (the stationary coil windings mounted to the tub), a rotor (the magnetic ring on the drive shaft), and a rotor position sensor (Hall sensor) that tells the control board where the motor is in its rotation. Unlike belt-driven washers, this motor directly spins the drum with no belt in between. When the stator windings open or short, the rotor position sensor fails, or the rotor comes loose or gets damaged, the washer loses the ability to tumble or spin.
Common failures include open or damaged stator windings, a failed Hall sensor or sensor connection, loose or corroded harness connectors at the stator assembly, and rotor mechanical issues like a loose bolt or seized bearing. Because the motor is direct-drive, even a small fault in the stator or rotor will stop drum rotation entirely.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Error code dE or LE on the display The washer throws a door error or motor-related code because it cannot detect normal motor rotation feedback from the Hall sensor.
- Drum will not spin or agitate The washer fills and drains but the drum stays still, even though there is no belt to break on a direct-drive model.
- Loud grinding, clicking, or rattling noise during spin A loose rotor or damaged rotor bearing creates metal-on-metal contact or vibration during attempted motor operation.
- Washer hums but drum does not move The control board is sending power to the stator but the rotor is not turning, often due to open windings or a seized rotor.
- Intermittent spin or slow rotation Weak or damaged stator windings or a failing Hall sensor cause erratic motor speed or stalling mid-cycle.
- Burning smell or visible scorch marks on stator Shorted or overheated windings in the stator produce a distinct electrical burning odor and may show discoloration on the coil assembly.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and turn off the hot and cold water supply valves behind the machine.
- Pull the washer away from the wall and use a screwdriver or nut driver to remove all screws securing the rear access panel, then lift the panel off.
- Locate the stator assembly (the round coil assembly mounted to the outer tub) and disconnect the wire harness connector and the rotor position sensor connector from the stator.
- Use a socket wrench or impact driver to remove the large center bolt and washer securing the rotor to the drive shaft, then carefully pull the rotor off the shaft (it may be tight and require wiggling or gentle prying).
- Remove the mounting bolts holding the stator to the tub, then lift the stator assembly off and inspect the windings for visible damage or scorch marks.
- Test the old stator windings with a multimeter set to ohms: measure resistance across each pair of phase terminals and expect roughly 5 to 15 ohms (an open or infinite reading means the stator has failed).
- Install the new stator by positioning it on the tub mounting points, threading in the mounting bolts, and reconnecting the stator harness and rotor position sensor connectors.
- Slide the new or reused rotor onto the drive shaft, align it squarely, and reinstall the center bolt and washer (tighten firmly and apply thread-lock compound if your repair instructions specify it).
- Reattach the rear panel, restore water supply, plug in the washer, and run a short spin cycle to verify the drum rotates smoothly and the error code clears.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| LG washer stator assembly | Amazon | Check your model and serial number on the washer’s data plate (inside the door or on the back panel) and search that number on the LG parts site or an appliance parts supplier to find the correct stator part number for your direct-drive model. |
| LG washer rotor | Amazon | Often sold separately from the stator. Use your model number to confirm fitment, especially if the rotor is cracked, warped, or has bearing damage. |
| Rotor position sensor (Hall sensor) | Amazon | Sometimes included with the stator assembly or available as a separate part. Verify whether your stator kit includes the sensor or if you need to order it separately. |

When to Call a Pro
If you are uncomfortable working with the rear of the washer, handling the heavy rotor and stator assembly, or diagnosing winding resistance with a multimeter, call a qualified appliance technician. The rotor bolt can be extremely tight and may require an impact driver or special tools to remove without damaging the shaft. A tech can also rule out control board output problems if the stator and rotor test good but the washer still will not spin.
