LG Mini Split Leaking Water — What’s Happening
When your LG mini split leaks water, the indoor unit is not draining condensate correctly or the evaporator coil is freezing and then melting. Water should flow through the condensate drain line to the outside, but clogs, improper drain pitch, dirty filters, or frozen coils can cause overflow. This is a symptom, not a fault code, and LG support points to drainage problems, frozen coils, dirty filters or coils, low refrigerant, and condensate pump or drain pan issues as the main causes.
Some water from the outdoor unit can be normal because cold refrigerant circulates through it. Indoor leaks, however, mean condensate is escaping or overflowing instead of draining through the correct path.
Most Likely Causes
- Clogged condensate drain line Dirt, dust, algae, fungus, or debris blocks the drain hose and stops water from flowing out, causing overflow from the indoor unit.
- Improper drain pitch or trap arrangement The drain hose must slope continuously downhill, and multiple traps or sags can block drainage and create standing water.
- Dirty air filter or evaporator coil Restricted airflow drives the coil too cold, ice forms, then melts and overflows the pan.
- Faulty condensate pump Where a pump is required, a failed pump stops drainage and water backs up into the indoor unit.
- Cracked or damaged drain pan A cracked, rusted, or misaligned pan lets water escape even when the drain line is clear.
- Low refrigerant Insufficient refrigerant can cause evaporator icing, then meltwater overflow when the ice thaws.
- Air leaks or poor insulation around the head High humidity, inadequate insulation, or incorrect blower settings promote surface condensation in and around the indoor unit.
How to Diagnose and Fix
- Kill power to the indoor unit before opening covers or handling the drain system.
- Verify where the water is coming from by checking the indoor discharge area, drain outlet, refrigerant line set area, and outdoor unit.
- Inspect the condensate drain path by confirming the hose slopes continuously downward with no unnecessary traps or sags, then remove the drain hose and look for sludge, algae, mold, dirt, or debris.
- Flush the drain line with water and clear any blockage with a fish tape or similar drain-cleaning tool until water flows freely.
- Check the air filter and clean or replace it if dirty, then inspect the evaporator coil for dirt or ice and shut the unit down to thaw if ice is present.
- Check for airflow issues by verifying blower speed, return-air blockage, and air sealing around the head installation.
- Inspect the condensate pan for cracks, corrosion, misalignment, or poor seating and replace if damaged.
- Check condensate pump operation if the installation uses one by confirming the pump is powered, switches correctly, and discharges water, and check for refrigerant-side causes only after drainage and airflow issues are resolved.

When to Call a Pro
Call a qualified HVAC technician if the coil freezes repeatedly after you have cleaned the filter and restored drainage, or if you suspect low refrigerant or a metering device problem. Refrigerant diagnostics require pressure and temperature measurements and EPA-certified handling. Also call a pro if the drain pan is damaged and requires removal of the indoor unit for replacement, or if you cannot safely access the drain line or electrical components.
