LG Dryer Won't Tumble - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

Broken or slipped drive belt is the most common cause. Check the belt condition and motor microswitch, then test motor and control signals.

LG Dryer Won’t Tumble — What’s Happening

When an LG dryer won’t tumble, the drum is not being driven even though the unit may power on and appear to run. This is a mechanical drive failure, not a single fault code. LG’s published error codes cover door faults (dE), power supply issues (PS), and temperature sensor problems (tE2), but there is no dedicated code for a drum that simply will not rotate.

The drive system relies on a belt around the drum, an idler tensioner, and a motor. If any of these components fail or if the belt comes off track, the drum stays stationary. A door that is not fully latched or a power supply problem can also prevent the cycle from starting, but the root issue in a true no-tumble complaint is usually on the drive side.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Start a cycle and observe whether the dryer powers on, runs the blower, and heats but the drum does not rotate, or if it will not start at all.
  2. Check that the door is fully closed and latched, the lint filter is seated properly, and there are no obstructions at the door opening.
  3. Unplug the dryer and remove the top or front panel to access the drum and drive belt.
  4. Inspect the drive belt for breakage, glazing, slippage, or derailment from the drum or motor pulley.
  5. Check the idler tensioner and its pulley for wear or loss of spring tension that would allow the belt to slip.
  6. Locate the drive belt microswitch at the motor housing and test its continuity and wiring connections.
  7. Verify the motor shaft turns freely and check the motor winding continuity and harness connections to the control board.
  8. If all mechanical and wiring checks pass, test the control board for output to the motor circuit, or replace the board if a command signal is missing.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Dryer drive beltAmazon | Specific to your LG model number, confirm length and width before ordering.
Drive motorAmazon | Match the motor part number on the tag at the motor housing.
Idler pulley and tensioner assemblyAmazon | Replace if the pulley is worn or the spring has lost tension.
Drive belt microswitchAmazon | Located at the motor housing, detects belt position or tension.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable removing panels, testing electrical continuity, or handling the motor and control board, call a qualified appliance technician. Drive belt replacement is straightforward for many DIYers, but diagnosing a failed microswitch, motor, or control board requires test equipment and experience with LG’s wiring. If the dryer is still under warranty or you cannot identify the failed component after inspecting the belt and motor, professional service is the best path forward.
