Keurig descaling solution
First part to price when descale, slow brew, or mineral buildup is the issue.
It is one of the most common frustrations with Keurig brewers: you spend 30 minutes descaling the machine, but the “Descale” light refuses to turn off. Or perhaps the light came on, but the machine won’t even start a brew cycle. This is usually due to a specific “reset” sequence required by the internal computer, or a mineral flake that has broken loose and is now clogging the flow sensor.
The good news is that you can reset a Keurig descale light in under 2 minutes without any tools.
What This Error Means
The descale light on a Keurig (including the K-Supreme, K-Elite, and K-Cafe) is triggered by two things:
- A Timer: Most models trigger the light every 250 brews or every 3-6 months.
- Thermal Sensors: If the heating element takes too long to reach its target temperature, the sensor assumes there is scale (calcium) acting as an insulator and triggers the light.
If the light stays on after descaling, the machine simply doesn’t know you’ve finished the process yet.

Step-by-Step Fix
1. The “Secret” Descale Reset (K-Supreme & K-Slim)
On newer models like the K-Supreme, the machine doesn’t automatically know you’ve finished. You must enter a special mode.
- Turn the machine OFF.
- Press and hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for 3 seconds.
- The Descale light will start flashing.
- The Key Step: You must run the entire reservoir of water through the machine using the “Large Mug” setting until the “Add Water” light comes on. If you stop halfway, the light will stay on.
2. The “Paperclip” Needle Flush
Sometimes the descale light stays on because mineral flakes are stuck in the exit needle, restricting flow and confusing the sensor.
- Unplug the Keurig.
- Remove the K-Cup holder and use a straightened paperclip to clear the three holes in the bottom needle.
- Use the paperclip to clear the entrance needle in the lid as well.
- This restores full flow, which allows the thermal sensor to see that the heater is working efficiently again.
3. Clearing the “Airlock” (The Turkey Baster Trick)
If the descale light is on and the machine is vibrating but no water is coming out:
- Remove the water reservoir.
- Fill a turkey baster with warm water.
- Place the tip of the baster directly against the water intake hole at the base of the machine.
- Squeeze firmly to force water through the internal pump. You should see air bubbles come out. This “primes” the pump and often clears the error light.
4. The Vinegar Deep-Soak
If you used a descaling solution and the light is still on, you may have “stubborn” calcium.
- Fill the tank with undiluted white vinegar.
- Run one brew cycle, then turn the machine OFF.
- Let the vinegar sit inside the machine for 4 hours.
- Turn it back on and finish the tank. The acidity of the vinegar is often more effective than commercial solutions for heavy buildup.

When to Call a Professional
Keurigs are generally not repairable at the component level because they are “snap-together” plastic.
- The light stays on after 3 resets: The flow sensor or the control board is faulty.
- Machine leaks from the bottom: An internal silicone hose has likely burst due to pressure.
- Burning plastic smell: The internal heating tank’s thermal switch has failed. Unplug it and do not use it again.
