Instant Pots are a kitchen staple, but they rely on precise temperature and pressure sensors that can easily be tripped by a bit of burnt food or a misaligned silicone ring. Seeing a code like “Burn” or “C7” can be frustrating, especially mid-meal, but most of these errors are safety features that you can clear in seconds.
Most Instant Pot errors are caused by lack of liquid or a dirty heating element.
What This Error Means
Instant Pot displays codes to indicate whether the internal temperature is too high or if a sensor isn’t responding.
- Burn: This is the most common. It means the bottom of the inner pot is too hot, usually because food is stuck to it.
- Lid: The lid isn’t closed properly or the sensor doesn’t realize it is closed.
- noFF: The heating element isn’t reaching temperature quickly enough (often a power issue).
- C-Codes (C1, C2, C6, C7): These are sensor-specific errors related to the heating element or the pressure switch.

Step-by-Step Fix
1. Resolving the “Burn” Error
This happens when thick sauces (like tomato or cream) or starch (like rice) stick to the bottom and create a “hot spot.”
- Press Cancel.
- Carefully release the pressure (Quick Release) and open the lid.
- Use a wooden spoon to scrape the bottom of the inner pot. Look for a dark layer of burnt food.
- The Secret: Add 1/2 cup of water or thin broth. If your recipe is thick, do not stir it in—just let it sit on top of the thinner liquid.
- Clean the bottom of the outside of the inner pot and the heating element in the base before putting it back in.
2. Fixing “Lid” and “noFF” Errors
- Lid: Ensure the lid is turned all the way to the “Locked” icon. If it is, check the small silver pin (float valve) near the handle. If it’s stuck in the “up” position, the lid sensor may trigger. Gently tap it down with a spoon.
- noFF: This often happens if the base isn’t getting enough voltage. Ensure the Instant Pot is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or a power strip shared with a toaster or microwave.
3. Resolving “C7” (Heating Fault)
This code usually means the pot is taking too long to come to pressure.
- Check the Silicone Sealing Ring. If it’s loose or has a gap, steam is escaping, and the pot can’t get hot enough.
- Ensure the Steam Release Handle (or switch) is set to the “Sealing” position.
- If you see steam coming out from under the lid while it’s trying to pressure up, the sealing ring needs to be reseated or replaced.
4. Cleaning the Heating Element
- If you’ve had a spill, the heating element in the bottom of the base may have a layer of dried food on it. This acts as an insulator, causing “C7” or “noFF” errors.
- Unplug the unit.
- Once cool, use a damp cloth (not wet!) to gently wipe the heating plate. If there is stubborn burnt food, use a small amount of Bar Keepers Friend on a damp rag to scrub it clean.

When to Call a Professional
Instant Pots are inexpensive, and internal electrical repairs are generally not recommended for safety reasons.
- Smoke coming from the base: Unplug immediately. The internal wiring or the logic board has shorted. Do not attempt to use it again.
- Display is blank or “flashing”: The internal fuse or the power board has failed.
- Pot won’t seal even with a new ring: The lid or the rim of the base may be slightly warped from a drop or extreme heat.
