Generac Error Code 2000 — Low Battery Fix
What it means: The Evolution controller measured battery terminal voltage below 11.5V. The controller will not attempt to start the generator with low battery voltage — it risks a failed start or controller damage from voltage sag during cranking.
This code usually appears after the generator has been in standby for weeks without starting, or after the battery has aged past its useful life.

Step-by-Step Fix
1. Check Battery Voltage
With utility power present (the generator should be charging), measure voltage at the battery terminals. A healthy charging system shows 13.2-13.8V. Below 12.4V at rest means the battery is discharged. Below 11.5V triggers the code.
2. Load Test
Batteries fail under load. A battery that reads 12.6V at rest can drop below 10V during cranking and cause all kinds of intermittent codes. I’ve replaced batteries that read fine on a multimeter but failed under load. Use a dedicated battery load tester or watch the voltage during a manual crank attempt.
3. Clean Battery Terminals
Corrosion on the terminals creates resistance that prevents proper charging and starting. Remove the cables, clean with a wire brush until shiny, reconnect and tighten. Apply dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. This zero-cost fix resolves about 15% of low battery faults.
4. Test the Battery Charger Board
The charger board (Generac 0E7346, ~$60) should output 13.2-13.8V at the battery terminals when utility power is present. If voltage is below 13V, the charger board has failed. I replace about 5 of these a year on units that have been installed for 5+ years.
5. Check for Parasitic Drain
The Evolution controller draws a small current in standby. Normally this is negligible, but a failed controller component can draw enough current to drain the battery over 2-3 weeks. Test: disconnect the battery negative cable and test amperage between the cable and battery post. Draw should be under 50mA. Above 200mA indicates a parasitic drain.

Technician Tips
Generac generator fault codes are displayed as flashing LED patterns on the controller. The red LED indicates a fault condition; green means normal operation. Code 1500 (low oil pressure) is the most common Generac fault — check oil level first, then the oil pressure switch. Generac generators have a built-in exercise cycle (every 7 days) — if the generator fails its exercise test, it logs a fault that may not trigger a warning light. Check the controller’s fault history to find these logged events.
Maintenance: Generac recommends oil changes every 100 hours of operation or annually. Skipping oil changes accelerates wear, sludge buildup, and low-oil shutdowns, so log each service interval and verify the controller maintenance timer after service.
