GE Oven Burner Won't Light - Causes & Fix

4 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Dirty burner ports or a misaligned cap block gas flow. Remove the cap and head, clear all holes, reassemble so tops match bottoms, then retest.

GE Oven Burner Won’t Light — What’s Happening

A GE oven burner that won’t light means the gas is not igniting at that burner. For a gas surface burner on the cooktop, you should hear clicking and see sparks when you turn the knob to Lite. If you don’t, the ignition circuit has no power or the electrode is dirty or misaligned. For a gas oven bake or broil burner, the hot-surface igniter should glow bright orange and then open the gas safety valve. If it glows weakly or not at all, the igniter is not drawing enough current to open the valve, or the ignition system has failed.

GE’s own troubleshooting starts by confirming whether the burner clicks and sparks, then moves to cleaning and correctly reassembling the burner parts. If the burner still won’t light after cleaning, GE directs you to check the gas supply valve and schedule service. The core causes overlap between surface burners and oven burners: ignition failure, dirty or blocked burner parts, moisture around the electrode or igniter, gas supply issues, or a failed control or spark module.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm which burner is affected and whether you hear clicking or sparking at a surface burner, or see the igniter glow in the oven.
  2. Check the circuit breaker if there is no clicking or sparking, because the ignition system requires power to operate.
  3. Remove the grate, burner cap, and burner head from the affected surface burner, then clear all holes in the burner head with a paper clip or toothpick.
  4. Wipe the electrode tip clean and dry with a paper towel, press it down so it is seated, then reassemble the burner so the cap and head align and lay flat.
  5. Turn the burner knob to Lite and listen for clicking and watch for sparks; if the burner clicks but does not light, inspect the gas supply valve under the cooktop to confirm it is open.
  6. For an oven burner that won’t light, observe the igniter during a bake or broil cycle; if it glows dim or not at all, measure the current draw at the valve circuit and replace the igniter if amperage is out of specification.
  7. If the burner still won’t light after cleaning, reassembly, and confirming power and gas supply, check for corroded spark module connections or damaged wiring at the module and switch assembly.
  8. If you find no obvious fault and the burner remains inoperative, schedule service to test the spark module, switch assembly, or oven igniter and valve circuit.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Gas range spark electrodeAmazon | Confirm electrode length and mounting for your GE model
Gas oven hot-surface igniter (bake or broil)Amazon | Measure current draw before replacing; specify bake or broil position
Spark module or spark switch assemblyAmazon | Located under the cooktop; inspect connections for corrosion

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you’ve cleaned and correctly reassembled the burner parts, confirmed power at the breaker, and verified the gas supply valve is open, but the burner still won’t light. Gas appliance ignition work requires testing live circuits, measuring igniter current draw at the valve, and diagnosing spark module or wiring faults. A qualified technician has the meters and experience to safely test the spark module, replace a failed igniter with amperage verification, and confirm proper gas flow through the orifice and venturi. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
