GE Dishwasher Float Switch / Flood Switch Replacement — What This Part Does
The flood switch (also called a float switch or overfill switch) is a safety device in the sump that signals the control board to stop filling when water reaches the correct level. A plastic float rises with the water and trips a microswitch inside the assembly. Some GE models use a combined flood-switch and thermistor part (WD21X10519), while others use a separate float piece (WD21X22822).
The part fails when the float gets stuck on debris, the switch mechanism breaks, or the wiring harness comes loose. A stuck or damaged float cannot move freely up and down. A failed switch cannot send the correct signal to the board. Either condition causes overfilling, underfilling, or a fill-related error code on the display.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dishwasher overfills and water spills onto the floor The float is stuck down or the switch is shorted closed, so the control never gets the signal to stop filling.
- Machine stops mid-cycle and displays a fill or leak error The flood switch is stuck in the tripped position or the wiring is loose, telling the board there is already too much water.
- Dishwasher won’t fill or fills very slowly The switch circuit is open or the connector has come unplugged, so the board cannot confirm it is safe to add water.
- Water level in the sump is too low and dishes don’t get clean The float is bent or debris is holding it up, causing the switch to trip early and stop the fill before enough water is in the tub.
- You find debris or food particles stuck under the float Even small bits of food or hard water scale can jam the float so it cannot rise and fall freely.
- Water leaks from the sump area after prior service The O-ring on the flood-switch assembly was left out, pinched, or the old ring was not removed before installing the new part.
How to Replace It
- Disconnect power to the dishwasher at the breaker or unplug the cord, and turn off the water supply valve under the sink.
- Open the dishwasher door, pull out both racks, and remove the filter cover and fine/ultra-fine filter assemblies by lifting or twisting them straight up.
- Locate the flood float in the center or side of the sump (a small cylindrical or dome-shaped piece), and lift it straight up off the sump base to inspect it for damage, bends, or debris.
- Check the sump cavity and the area under the float for food particles, hard-water deposits, or any obstruction, and clean the cavity thoroughly with a damp cloth.
- If the float itself is damaged or the switch assembly is faulty, locate the flood-switch or thermistor assembly below or beside the float location, disconnect the wiring harness by pressing the tab and pulling, then remove any mounting screws or twist-lock ring holding the assembly in place.
- Pull the old switch assembly straight out, inspect the opening for any old O-ring or debris, and clean the cavity completely before installing the new part.
- Install the new flood-switch assembly (or new float if your model uses a separate float part), making sure the O-ring is seated on the new switch body and not pinched, then reconnect the wiring harness until it clicks and secure any mounting screws or twist ring.
- Reinstall the filters and filter cover in reverse order, restore power and water, and run a short fill or rinse cycle to confirm the dishwasher fills to the correct level and stops without error.
- Watch for leaks around the sump area during the test cycle, and check that the dishwasher completes the cycle without overfilling or showing a fill fault on the display.

When to Call a Pro
If you are not comfortable disconnecting power and working inside the sump, or if you replace the float and switch but the dishwasher still overfills or shows a fill error, call a qualified appliance technician. The problem may be a faulty control board, a pinched or damaged main harness, or a water-inlet valve that is not closing. A tech can also check for proper water pressure and verify that all connectors and O-rings are seated correctly to prevent leaks.
