GE Dishwasher Control Board Replacement — What This Part Does
The main electronic control board runs your GE dishwasher’s cycle logic, reads inputs from the door latch and water sensors, and sends power to the pump, heater, and valve. It stores program memory in an EEPROM chip and communicates with the user interface to execute the cycle you selected.
Boards fail from power surges, moisture intrusion at connectors, or corrupted EEPROM memory. Loose or browned harness connections at the board terminals are a common practical failure point. When the board’s memory or logic circuits go bad, you’ll see fault codes like FF (door motor safety switch loss), FFF (EEPROM checksum error), or a persistent PF (power failure) that won’t clear even after a breaker reset.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- FF or FFF fault code on the display GE’s fault guide says FF means loss of door motor safety switch and FFF means EEPROM checksum error, both calling for control board replacement.
- PF code returns immediately after reset PF indicates a power failure, and if it won’t clear after selecting cancel and power cycling, the control board or its connections are defective.
- Display is completely dead or frozen No lights, no response to buttons, and no beeps point to a control board that has lost power or logic function.
- Unit won’t start any cycle If the display lights up but pressing start does nothing and no fault code appears, the board’s output circuits may be dead.
- Intermittent cycle stops with no code The dishwasher starts a cycle, then quits mid-wash with no error, often a sign of marginal board logic or connector integrity.
- Random error codes that change every reset Multiple different codes appearing in succession usually mean corrupted control memory or a failing EEPROM chip on the board.
How to Replace It
- Shut off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and leave it off for at least two minutes to discharge the control board.
- Turn off the water supply valve under the sink, then pull the dishwasher forward enough to access the junction box or power cable on the left or right side.
- Remove the screws securing the lower access panel or toe-kick, then remove the screws holding the inner door panel if your model mounts the control board behind the door.
- Locate the model and serial number plate (usually on the door frame or inner tub edge) and write down the full model number to cross-reference the correct control board part number.
- Photograph or label every wire harness connector on the old control board before unplugging them so you have a wiring map for reassembly.
- Unscrew the mounting screws that hold the control board to the bracket or door panel and lift the old board free, keeping connectors clear of sharp edges.
- Position the new control board on the same mounting holes, secure it with the original screws, and reconnect every harness plug in the exact positions shown in your photos.
- Reinstall the inner door panel or lower access panel, push the dishwasher back into place, and reconnect the power cable or hardwire at the junction box.
- Restore power at the breaker, turn the water supply back on, and run a rinse or normal cycle to verify the control communicates with the user interface and completes a full cycle without fault codes.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Main electronic control board (PCB) | Amazon | Model-specific. Find your exact part number using the model and serial plate on the dishwasher door frame or inner tub, then cross-reference on GE’s parts site or with an authorized supplier. |
| User interface board or touchpad assembly | Amazon | Some GE models split control logic between the main board and the UI. If the new main board still won’t communicate or the display stays dead, the UI board may also need replacement. |

When to Call a Pro
If you’re not confident working with 120 V household wiring or if the dishwasher is hardwired rather than plug-in, call a tech to handle the disconnect and reconnect safely. Also call a pro if you replace the control board and the same fault code returns right away, since that points to a wiring short, a faulty door latch circuit, or a bad UI board that needs diagnosis beyond simple board swap. Finally, if your model’s service literature lists a different code or repair path than FF, FFF, or PF, get a tech who has access to GE’s full model-specific fault matrix before buying parts.
