What SY CE Actually Means
“SY” refers to the System, and “CE” stands for Communication Error. The main control board (also called the motherboard) sends and receives data from:
- The evaporator fan board (if a separate sub-board exists)
- Temperature sensors (thermistors) in the fresh food and/or freezer sections
- The dispenser board (on models with ice/water)
When one of these communication paths breaks down — due to a failed sensor, a loose wire, a faulty sub-board, or a failing main board — the refrigerator logs SY CE.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis and Fix
Step 1 — Power Cycle First
Many SY CE errors are transient, triggered by a momentary power fluctuation.
- Unplug the refrigerator or trip its circuit breaker.
- Wait 5 full minutes — not 30 seconds. The main board needs time to fully discharge.
- Restore power.
- Wait 15 minutes and check whether SY CE returns.
If it doesn’t come back, problem solved. If it returns within a cycle or two, continue below.
Step 2 — Check All Wiring Harness Connections
Communication errors are often caused by loose or corroded connector pins rather than fully failed components.
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Access the main control board — usually at the back of the refrigerator behind a panel, or in some models at the top rear.
- Inspect every wiring harness connector on the board. Press each one firmly to ensure it’s fully seated.
- Look for corrosion on connector pins (green or white residue). Clean with electrical contact cleaner if found.
- Trace the wiring from the board to the evaporator fan area in the freezer section and check those connectors too.
Step 3 — Test the Temperature Sensors (Thermistors)
Frigidaire refrigerators use NTC thermistors whose resistance changes with temperature. At room temperature (~68°F/20°C), a healthy thermistor typically reads 5,000–10,000 ohms depending on the model.
- Unplug the refrigerator.
- Locate the fresh food and freezer temperature sensors — typically clipped to evaporator coils or air ducts.
- Disconnect the sensor connectors and test with a multimeter.
- If a sensor reads open circuit (infinite resistance) or dramatically out of range, it has failed.
- Replace the faulty sensor.
Step 4 — Inspect the Evaporator Fan Board
Some Frigidaire models use a small sub-board to control the evaporator fan. If this board fails, the main board loses communication with a key system component and logs SY CE.
Symptoms: freezer compartment not cold enough, or fan not running even when compressor is active.
Replace the evaporator fan board if other checks are clean.
Step 5 — Main Control Board
