Frigidaire Gas Range Spark Igniter Switch Replacement

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

When a burner won't spark or sparks continuously, a failed spark igniter switch is often the cause. Replacing the switch and harness assembly restores normal ignition.

Frigidaire Gas Range Spark Igniter Switch Replacement — What This Part Does

The spark igniter switch mounts on each gas valve shaft and sends an ignition signal to the spark module when you turn the knob. When the valve rotates, the switch closes and tells the module to spark the electrode at that burner. The harness carries the signal from each switch to the module, so a complete switch-and-harness assembly is typically replaced as a unit.

These switches fail when internal contacts wear out, when the harness wiring breaks or corrodes, or when the switch isn’t seated properly on the valve stem. Contamination around the valve or control panel can also prevent the switch from actuating fully when you rotate the knob. A bad switch or harness means the module won’t spark the right burner, or it will spark erratically.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the range or switch off the circuit breaker, then shut off the gas supply valve to the appliance.
  2. Remove the grates, burner caps, and burner bases from the cooktop to access the top and valve area.
  3. Pull off the control knobs and remove the screws or clips securing the control panel to expose the ignition switches and wire harness underneath.
  4. Take a photo or note the wire routing and terminal positions at each switch and at the spark module before disconnecting anything, paying attention to the black and red spark wires.
  5. Check that each switch actuator is physically engaged on the valve stem and that rotating the shaft would close the switch contacts.
  6. Disconnect the old spark ignition switch and harness from the spark module terminals and from each individual switch connector.
  7. Install the new spark ignition switch and harness assembly, routing the wires exactly as the original and connecting each terminal in the correct order at the module and switches.
  8. Reinstall the control panel, secure all screws or clips, then replace the control knobs, burner bases, caps, and grates.
  9. Turn on the gas supply and restore electrical power, then test each burner by turning the knob and verifying proper spark and ignition at the correct burner.

When to Call a Pro

If you’re uncomfortable working around gas lines or tracing ignition wiring, call a qualified appliance technician. Gas burner ignition systems require careful wire routing and terminal placement, and a mistake can cause continuous sparking, burner crossover, or no ignition at all. A pro can also test the spark module (part 808608804) and electrodes to confirm the switches are the actual problem before you order parts. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
