Frigidaire Gas Oven Safety Valve Replacement — What This Part Does

The gas oven safety valve (also called the gas control valve) is an electrically heated valve that opens only after the oven igniter draws enough current to prove safe ignition. The igniter heats up and pulls current through the valve coil. Once the coil reaches the right temperature, it opens and allows gas to flow to the burner. If the valve fails internally, the coil loses continuity and will not open, even if the igniter is glowing.

Most failures are either a burned-out valve coil with no electrical continuity, or a weak igniter that glows but does not pull enough current to open the valve. The valve itself is model-specific, and Frigidaire uses part numbers like 3203459 (cross-referenced as AP3879604 or PS1150314). Because this repair involves both electrical circuits and gas connections, many technicians recommend professional service for safety and proper leak testing.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the range from the wall outlet and turn off the gas supply valve on the line feeding the oven (typically behind or below the range).
  2. Pull the range away from the wall for access, then open the oven door and remove all racks.
  3. Remove the oven bottom panel (lift the front edge and slide forward) and any burner shield or heat baffle covering the gas burner and valve assembly.
  4. Disconnect the two wires from the safety valve terminals, then use a multimeter set to ohms to check continuity across the valve (a good valve reads 0 to 5 Ω; no reading or infinite resistance means the valve is defective).
  5. If the valve tests open, disconnect the gas supply tube from the rear of the valve (use two wrenches to avoid twisting the tubing), then remove the mounting screws or bracket holding the valve to the burner box.
  6. Install the new safety valve in the same orientation, secure the mounting hardware, and reconnect the gas supply tube hand-tight plus one quarter-turn with a wrench.
  7. Reconnect the two valve wires to the terminals (orientation does not matter for the coil circuit), then reinstall the burner shield, bottom panel, oven racks, and door.
  8. Slide the range back into position, turn the gas supply back on, and check the gas fitting at the valve for leaks using soapy water or a leak-detector solution (bubbles indicate a leak; retighten if needed).
  9. Plug in the range, set the oven to bake at 350 °F, and verify that the igniter glows and the burner lights within 90 seconds.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working with gas lines, cannot locate the gas shut-off valve, or smell gas during disassembly, stop immediately and call a qualified appliance technician or gas fitter. Leak testing is required after every gas connection is reassembled, and improper installation can cause gas leaks or carbon-monoxide hazards. Technicians also carry calibrated leak detectors and the correct torque specs for your model. If the new valve still does not open or you measure correct continuity but the oven will not light, the igniter, wiring harness, or oven control board may also be faulty and will require further diagnosis. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
