Parts to price first

Check the part before you book service.

Amana Washer Lid Lock Assembly

Common replacement when the washer senses the lid open and refuses to start.

Amana Washer Lid Strike

Low-cost plastic strike that can crack and prevent the lid lock from engaging.

Washer Water Inlet Valve

Replacement part if the washer has power but will not fill after screens and hoses are clear.

An Amana washer that will not start usually has a simple lockout. The control may have power, but the washer will not run until it sees the lid closed, water available, and the previous drain state cleared.

Start with the no-tool checks before buying a control board. On Amana and Whirlpool-built top-load washers, lid lock and lid strike problems are much more common than failed electronics.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Check the outlet. Plug a lamp, phone charger, or outlet tester into the same outlet. If there is no power, reset the breaker. If the washer is on a GFCI circuit, reset the GFCI too.

  2. Reset the control. Unplug the washer for one minute. Plug it back in, select Normal, then press Start. A reset will clear a temporary control fault, but it will not fix a failed lid lock or blocked drain.

  3. Clear control lock. If the panel responds but the washer will not start, look for a lock indicator. Hold the control lock, end signal, or cycle signal button for 3 seconds.

  4. Inspect the lid strike. The small plastic tab on the lid has to enter the lock cleanly. If it is cracked, loose, or missing, the washer will think the lid is open.

  5. Listen for the lid lock. Press Start with the lid closed. A healthy lock usually clicks once and then the cycle begins. Repeated clicking, no click, or a lock light that flashes points to the strike, lock assembly, or lock wiring.

  6. Verify water supply. Amana washers may stop at the start of the cycle if they cannot fill. Make sure both valves are open, hoses are not kinked, and inlet screens are not packed with sediment.

  7. Check for drain lockout. If water is still in the tub, the washer may refuse to begin a new cycle. Lower the drain hose into a bucket if safe, then check the hose and pump path for blockage.

  8. Inspect the wiring before replacing the board. Unplug the washer and check connectors at the lid lock and control panel. A loose connector can look like a failed board.

When to Call a Technician

Call a technician if the outlet is live, the lid strike and lock look good, the washer fills normally, and the control still will not start a cycle. At that point the failure may be in the main control, motor control, harness, or internal safety circuit.

Quick FAQ

Why won't my Amana washer start?

The most common causes are no power, control lock, an open lid or failed lid lock, water supply problems, or a washer that is still holding water from a drain fault.

How do I reset an Amana washer that will not start?

Unplug the washer for one minute, plug it back in, then choose a normal cycle and press Start. If the lid lock clicks but the cycle does not begin, continue with lid lock, water fill, and drain checks.

Can a bad lid lock stop an Amana washer from starting?

Yes. Most Amana top-load washers will not agitate or spin unless the lid switch or lid lock reports closed. A broken strike, loose connector, or failed switch can stop the cycle before it starts.

When should I replace the control board?

Replace the control board only after confirming outlet power, control lock status, lid lock operation, water supply, drain status, and wiring connections. Control boards are much less common than lock, switch, and power issues.
